converting a P to a P/J

Question - I am contemplating conveting my Lakland Bob Glaub P to a P/J configuration (I love the Lakland Jazz Pickups so much on my DJ!)

I will have Lakland do the work if I do it.....am checking into pricing and timing as we speak (I have an e-mail into Dan).

My question is - should I add a separate volume knob for the Jazz pickup or a knob to select between the pickups? Which do you think will be more useful?

I want to be able to mix the two pickups so I do not want a simple toggle switch......

I always prefer seperate volumes, but its all personal preference.

Alot of people like the blend and volume as you can easily turn your volume all the way down without loosing the balance you have set between the pickups.

Has anyone done this? I know at least one person who thought about it.....if you have, what are your thoughts? would you do it again?

Thanks everyone.....I am leaning towards a blend knob...

like the idea of a stacked tone/volume for each pick up but we will see if this will cost "too much".....

not a sure thing yet (we will see on the feedback from Dan $$$$).....will tell y'all what I decide.....

I just heard back from Brian Gingrich at Lakland - he states that they cannot do the conversion...boy am I bummed! I wanted to keep my bass "all Lakland"....I have heard of at least one other bass player (on here or another forum) who contacted them a few years ago about the same conversion and they were willing to do it then....not sure why they will not now....

anyways - Brian is going to recommend a person in the Chicago area who can do it - but I want to make sure I get the new Lakalnd pick up in it.....

For passive, I would go Master Volume/Blend/Tone

And if you're feeling adventurous maybe even a 2 Tones ala Stratocaster.

I just got back from a gig and honestly, I didn't use my pickup selector at. I found a good sound and kept that for the whole set.

BTW, the control cavity in your Bob Glaub doesn't have space for another knob unless you change the input jack to the side.

My P-MM bass's control is quite cramp..

I've always preferred VVT... but I'm thinking about going with a 3 way selector switch like the Tony Franklin Precision.

This type of mod was all the rage 20+ years ago. I'd love a PJ Glaub myself! GREAT basses!

In terms of controls, I will cast my vote for V-B-T. I love the blend knob!

Just make sure you get someone reputable; maybe Jay at Blueberry Hill can suggest someone for you.

Its all about Master Volume/Blend/Tone. That way you only have to turn down one knob in between songs.

1. No, it's not a Darkstar.

2. I have not seen a stacked blend/tone pot. A blend pot is already two pots together that function as one, turning the volume of one down while turning the other up. I doubt you'd be able to find this in a stacked form.
