Converting my passive to active

Have a 98' MIM Fender Jazz 5. It currently has the passive Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder pick ups. I am thinking about changing pups and adding on an onboard preamp. In doing that I would need to cut up the bass for the battery. I am looking for a fat, warm tone (Sadowsky). I can get half way good tones if I use my Sansamp BDDI box to fatten it up. Not really digging these pups. Do you have any reccomendations on pups and preamp? Also, when cutting the body will it effect tone a lot?
