Convincing the wife

OK guys, I need some input. I played "the bass" saturday. :hyper: Wouldn't you know it, I wasn't even looking for a bass. I love my Warwick, but when I played this one:eek:. The problem is, I bought my Warwick about 1 1/2 years ago, and at the time it was "the one". I usually don't change basses very often, before the Warwick, I had had my prior bass for 20 years. How do I sell the wife on this one. I can only justify one super nice bass at time, so the Warwick would be leaving. Any creative sugestions?

First: Reconsider why we marry in the first place. OK, too late, moot point. Second: Reconsider why you chose a partner who puts a crimp in your bass playing life. Right, same thing. Third: reconsider why couples that choose to marry don’t organize at least partially independent financial lives. OK, same answer.

My point: to those who love to play bass and are yet to marry, heed the above!

well the current "one" may do some things very well and needs to stick around, and the "one" you're eyeing now may do other things very well...tell your wife she's the "ONE" and these instruments aren't even close surrogates, and have two basses. If you're gigging you'll be able to afford it and won't feel the pain of losing a Warwick you spent good times with.

Take your wife on a vacation that costs more than the bass. During the vacation, kindly mention to her the bass you want to buy. She will ask of course, how much is the bass? Then you can tell her it costs less than the vacation. :eyebrow: Think about it...

Yeah, I was going to use a car analogy, she doesn't care for the van that we just bought, that she thought she was going to really like.

Oh, the warwick will be sold if this one is to be bought. It's just going to take some more cash along with it.

Ugh...Pi$$es me off just thinkin bout it.
I hear bout all these guys here, whos wives actually even buy them basses.I had to sell my soul to get an ATK on clearance..for a christmas present...and pay it back with gig money...and I'm still hearin bout it.

If you don't have kids...run..run away.

Absolutely.
After my last experience..this is how I will handle any future purchases.
(of course, that is a pricey bass..)

I look at it like this, How much is the tone that you hear in your head worth? I mean the tone that you strive for. That's what I hear when I play this bass. It may not be "everyone's tone", but it's mine. Not to mention this thing plays better than any bass I've ever played. :bassist: If you live in JC, I would suggest that you make the drive up to Blacksburg and yell at Greg at RocketMusic. You will not be disappointed.

If you are loaded, why would she care?
If you are a big time pro, it's another tool for your job, so why would she care?
If you are neither, why would you need such an expensive instrument? Don't put your family in financial stress for a bass. I said it. It's just a bass!
You could compromise and buy something cheap, like a Sadowsky ;) and donate the other 2 grand or so to charity.
I suggest the THand Foundation, PM me for the address:D

I'm sure as heck not loaded. And I'm certainly not a pro. It's not like I want to go drop $25k on a sports car.

It is usually easier to obtain forgiveness after the fact as opposed to permission before the fact.

You're a player. You're going to make it back with gigs. I bought a guitar some years ago and caught flak. Over the next six months the guitar was paid for with gigs. Not a word since. We are lucky in that we pursue one of the few avocations that actually earns $$ instead of just mostly spending $$. Everyone, even our respective spouses and families, forget that occasionally. So we approach it with a business cost/benefit analysis instead of just the hobby "I wanna." This approach also keeps G.A.S. in check. I can truly say that every instrument in my stable has earned its keep, literally, not just figuratively or subjectively, as with charity gigs. Just keep all your receipts for your accountant and your schedule C, so you can show it. Hell, it's a recession. Everybody is "losing money" this year!
