Convincing the wife

I look at it like this, How much is the tone that you hear in your head worth? I mean the tone that you strive for. That's what I hear when I play this bass. It may not be "everyone's tone", but it's mine. Not to mention this thing plays better than any bass I've ever played.

The question is, which tone is more important to you? The bass or the one coming from the next pillow and how do you get the right one to have the growl you look for and the right one to purr softly?

Good luck with that. Seriously.

If you are loaded, why would she care?
If you are a big time pro, it's another tool for your job, so why would she care?
If you are neither, why would you need such an expensive instrument? Don't put your family in financial stress for a bass. I said it. It's just a bass!
You could compromise and buy something cheap, like a Sadowsky ;) and donate the other 2 grand or so to charity.
I suggest the THand Foundation, PM me for the address:D

This.

My wife keeps telling me to buy a nice 5-string b/c I 'need' one but I know it would be a burden financially right now. In my mind I can't justify it because my gig is not really a big money maker yet and I already have a great 4-string that can handle 99.99% of what I want to do. But that's just my situation.

Everyone's marriages are different. People who hate on marriage in general obviously have an issue with their own respective spouse. Only you know your wife, your finances, and your gigging situation. If you have the extra cash and can justify the purchase and your wife is understanding, just talk to her about it. If you can logically (ignoring all GAS) justify the purchase the you should be able to explain it to her.

That being said, that Roscoe looks freakin sweet. Om nom nom nom....

I did the same thing a few years back. I hid the bass for a week before I told my wife about it (she would find out sooner or later). I told her I just couldn't pass up this deal and I would sell one or two of my other Fenders plus gear I don't use anymore to pay for it. But she knows how much I love a good bass and playing it as much as I do, she realized that it was worth the purchase. Still have my other basses and gear. Play the hell out of that new bass!

OK guys, I need some input. I played "the bass" saturday. :hyper: Wouldn't you know it, I wasn't even looking for a bass. I love my Warwick, but when I played this one:eek:. The problem is, I bought my Warwick about 1 1/2 years ago, and at the time it was "the one". I usually don't change basses very often, before the Warwick, I had had my prior bass for 20 years. How do I sell the wife on this one. I can only justify one super nice bass at time, so the Warwick would be leaving. Any creative sugestions?

Who's paying for it?

If you wanna buy it from your money, buy it and don't moan if she choses to buy stuff from hers.
Why should you have to justify anything to anyone if it is your money you intend to use and as long as the mutual bills don't get into trouble for it.
Simple:)

For a long time I bought all my basses in the same color. If I was going to use one as a trade in I would take it in a gig bag and make sure she saw me walk out the door with the gig bag. After being together over 11 years she still can't tell one basses from the next unless its really different in color and shape. She also knows I do a lot of gear trading on CL so she never knows what I paid for and what I traded for. :D

life is not a sitcom dude........when you get married you assume a certain sense of responsibility for the spouses welfare.....an expenditure of that magnitude is something the think about, especially during times of economic uncertainty.....i'd like to own a 62 pre,but i kinda like having a roof over my head.....

Don't assume. Where in my post did I say I was married? I'm not. I've been with the same woman for 11 years yes, but married, no.

oh....sorry.....i was unaware that unmarried long term relationships require a lower standard of honesty.....

First of all, I don't lie to her. If she asks me she gets an honest answer. Second it really isn't any of her business what I spend my money on, just like its none of my business what she spends her money on. Yes, being married makes a difference. Then I would be obligated to ask her first. I use the "gig bag method" as a way to not stir up crap because she thinks if I have extra money then its time for a trip to the casino. Frankly I don't like casinos and would much rather have a guitar I can sell than waste a whole day losing money. She sees it the other way, she would rather be at a casino than me buy a bass. Thats why we are not married.

my wife is very supportive, thank the Lord for that, can't offer any suggestions . . . although $4k is a lot of $$, it would be very awesome to have it!!

be careful how you present this to your wife though, you don't want her to think that you will want to replace her in a fews when something nicer comes along
