and the Sniffers.
And yes, Amy Taylor was in fine form…
It was quite nostalgic; I haven't been in a mosh pit since before anyone in either band was born.

An Aussie band, playing in Austin, named after amyl nitrate poppers, popular in the discos in the late '70s and early '80s, before they were born.

They also played a club in Bordeaux, 45 minutes from me.
No, this event was in Pioneertown, near the lovely* burg of Yucca Valley, CA, where I live, on the outside stage of the venue, Pappy and Harriet's…An Aussie band, playing in Austin, named after amyl nitrate poppers, popular in the discos in the late '70s and early '80s, before they were born.

The roadhouse is situated at the end of what had been an old west town movie set built by Roy Rodgers and one of his stuntmen. This is real roadrunner and coyote country.

Pappy and Harriet's looks like a cool place. I'd have me some ribs, you betcha. It's nice to see a place with live music many nights of the week. The Drive-by Truckers would be a good show.
You know, this entire area is so funny/weird; it's out in the middle of nowhere in the high desert up above Palm Springs, and the mountains with the Big Bear and Arrowhead ski resorts are directly to the west. But it's always been a weekend getaway destination for people in LA, plus alternative residences. Jason Momoa supposedly has a place up here, as did Amber Heard(before she sold it to settle up with Johnny Depp).
Concrete Blond's Johnette Napolitano is around(we went to an art gallery showing of her stuff), Eric Burdon used to live down the road, many inhabitants of the Queens Of The Stone Age universe are from the area(plus a recording studio that they and a lot of notables have used). A quirky singer songwriter beloved by many, Victoria Williams, has been in JT for decades, Robert
Plant sat in with her band once.
There's an arts scene in JT as well. I even came across someone I knew in high school who had gone to New York, did advertising and album covers, but ended just a 15 minute drive away. Harold Budd, an associate of Brian Eno, had lived up here; my wife, a harpist, played on one of his albums, and we had hung out at his house. He died a couple of years ago, I really miss him.
Even though U2 initially made the JT name well known, the myth surrounding Gram Parsons is more of a tourist draw, as he is a sort of patron saint for the Americana crowd. People come from all over the world to stay in the motel room where he died, and to go out to the park to the place where his body was burned, something of a shrine…
Right up above that is where this photo of Gram and Keith Richards was taken…
Pappy's is a small scale gig that many name bands go out of their way to play; The Pretenders were there just last week. McCartney did a 'secret' show on the inside stage…
Plus many videos/commercials/movies are shot in the region…

I like both of them. Amyl and the Sniffers are so good. Make me think of the Runaways with that touch of throwback rock.
Well, The Runaways were forerunners of it, but I think of this crew as a modern take on OG '77 punk, X-Ray Spex in particular, with a splash of early AC/DC thrown on(after all, they are Aussies). Sure, they're not exactly original, but nobody else is doing it, and after so many years of all that tired bro-punk, pop-punk, and whiney emo, it's like a breath of fresh air. Her cheerful yet 'don't F with me' personality tops it off. It was just a fun time.
