The Precision Basses that you see featuring Thunderbird pickups were configured that way for his gig with The Who, to better emulate the tone of the Thunderbird basses that John Entwistle used to play. At least that is my understanding. As for the Mudbucker, why not?

Some of the earliest Sunn amplifiers. Bassist Norm Sundholm(who was not on "Louie Louie")had been using a Fender Bassman with the smaller horizontal 2x12" cabinet. He turned to his electronics-minded brother, Conrad, for help in improving his sound and to make it louder. They replaced the drivers with JBL's, then Conrad suggested using a linear Dynaco hi-fi power amp with KT88's. A preamp was designed, and all of the elements were put together in a new package. A new company was born.
