On the nights of October 30-31,1968 at Detroit's Grande Ballroom, the MC5 recorded their first album for Elektra Records...a unique circumstance at the time, a live album as a debut recording. Elektra contracted with renowned photographer Joel Brodsky to shoot the event. Gary Grimshaw did the original album cover, but the label rejected it, and Brodsky's photos were used to create the collage for the album's outer jacket. Leni Sinclair's group photo was used for the interior gatefold (John Sinclair provided the liner notes-later removed). The album was titled Kick Out the Jams and it was released in February of 1969...reaching #30 on Billboard's album chart at its peak. Controversies ensued regarding the album, with some stores refusing to sell it. Elektra ended up dropping the band, purportedly to cut their losses. - Ron Domilici

Tony Levin: my old friend Larry Fast sent me this pic from making Peter Gabriel's Security album, back in the early 80's. it was an early MusicMan bass that picked up so much static noise that they needed to ground ME, from toe to the console. pretty low tech, but it worked.
