Yeah, those particular pics always look odd to me too.

I think the boys couldn't bring their own instruments to the studio for that one for whatever reason (Dutch Top of the Pops, 1974). I'm pretty sure that's not John's bass or Roger's drums either, and they were all borrowed for the mostly mimed performance (Freddie may be doing some of his own singing).

Yes - I've heard that story too.
Definitely not Roger's drum set. He's barely tapping on it in this lip synced performance.
The Jazz and Strat aren't even plugged in.
Freddie probably had to dismantle the tv shows mic stand to have his signature vocal prop..

I used to see Black Oak around Long Beach in the early 70's. The more current photos are creeping me out. What the hell happened to them? These are the same guys who used to run around the stage like madmen, sometimes with roller skates on.

Really only known in the USA for their song "Hocus Pocus" but they were in fact an excellent prog-rock band.
Their guitarist Jan Ackkermon was criminally underrated and deserved to be recognized as one of the greats of the era.

His late 70's line up with Pat Thrall, Mars Cowling and Tommy Aldridge was truly phenomenal. His album "Go For What You Know" is still one of the seminal live recordings.

Is that the one with the live 'Snorting whiskey and drinking cocaine' song they're known for? It rocks like all he77 breaking loose ... and it must numb and burn all at the same time Not gonna try that at home!

That's the one and in my opinion "Snortin' Whiskey" is the weakest song on the album, not tat it doen't totally rock but everything else in the set just smokes it. Mars Cowling gives a rock bass master class on that album.

Focus were an incredible band. All of their albums in my collection were played regularly with Yes,Genesis,Gentle Giant,King Crimson,and other prog of the day....
