Frank Marino was unfairly tarred as a "Hendrix imitator" due to the popularity of a few Hendrix songs he covered. Frank is in fact an incredible guitarist and a great singer/songwriter in his own right.

I used to see Black Oak around Long Beach in the early 70's. The more current photos are creeping me out. What the hell happened to them? These are the same guys who used to run around the stage like madmen, sometimes with roller skates on.

I posted those Black Oak Arkansas pics because the transformation was so shocking!!


Some people have aged really well....but clearly lifestyle is a factor.

We did a show with these guys once in the early 2000's , they were actually the first act on the bill that evening. I went out to have a look as I'd seen them in there heyday back in the 70's. Man I about fell over when I saw ol' Jim Dandy strut around in some big and tall sized leather britches, It was kind of sad really. I mean ...lord have mercy, give it up man, its not an attractive look at that stage of your life.

On a side note, for some reason I was under the impression that Frank had passed away some years ago, don't ask me why, but imagine my surprise as I was perusing a monthly periodical about guitars and guitarist's when I happened across an article on Frank, turns out he's very much alive, he just decided to hang out up in Canada for a long time.

Actually Frank had decided to hang it up and was not doing anything in music until last year when my friend convinced him to play on his album. Since then they have become very good friends and are collaborating on new music together. He is about to release a live concert DVD (I'm not sure when the video was originally shot, I'll ask him when I talk to him next).

I wore out a few copies of the Live album back in high school. Funny thing, the very first rock concert I ever attended was Aerosmith, Frank Marino and a band no one had ever heard of called AC/DC. Frank actually did not play due to a hand injury but I did get to see him in concert twice at other times back in the day.

Talking about Frank Marino.
I had a job for a summer unloading artists' gear into the Paramount in Portland. One night I also did "security" guarding a window in the backstage area.

It was two shows that night, and in between I hung out with Gary (bass) and Jimmy (drums); and Frank.
They were all super cool to me. I smoked their weed and drank their cokes. Frank told me that if I wanted to make it big, I should go somewhere I wasn't from and do it there.

Ted Nugent was headliner. Did not meet him.
