Janis Joplin. She sang with more heart than anyone I ever heard. Her voice carried so much of who she was right from the depths of her soul. She probably wouldn't make it today because of the emphasis on appearance. 
I wonder how many amazing musicians there are in the world that aren't being heard because they don't fit the pop star mold. Give me a great singer over bubble gum pabulum any day. Those types were around even back when Janis was breaking the mold.
