Ehh, they’re just following in the footsteps(so to speak)of The Shadows, the UK’s version of The Ventures(and the heroes of scores of British Invasion bands)…

Speaking of The Ventures, they could move and groove…

However, it’s not likely that The Chantays ever heard of The Shadows, they were never promoted here; the only British band of that ilk in those days that had any impact were The Tornadoes with “Telstar”, and anyway, a British band playing rock’n’roll? What a ridiculous notion.

I thought that was Bob Bogle on bass. He’s up on the highest pedestal, maybe he had vertigo.

Not sure exactly, but I always thought Nokie Edwards was on bass. Maybe he had High Anxiety?

Don and Bob started the band, both on guitars, then Nokie joined early on, switching from guitar to play bass. As he was a far better guitarist, they quickly rearranged their assets to place Nokie on lead, Bob on bass. They also went through a couple of drummers before settling on Mel Taylor, who happened to be Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor’s brother(in those days, Larry was gigging with Jerry Lee Lewis, I believe).

In real life, Nils was QUIET. He and his wife Amy used to frequent the same Mexican restaurant bar we did on Wednesdays (Los Sombreros in south Scottsdale). Amy did all of the talking.
