Cool rock n roll photos

74 willie's picnic. Legend in Texas, as this was the 1st show that really brought the hippies and the cowboys together. Previous to that, cowboys beat up hippies in Texas.

I read a great piece in the NYT yesterday about Willie, and yeah, they mentioned the 4th of July parties he holds, and that blending of the hippies and cowboys, etc. That's where I nicked these two pictures from.

My dad was a big Willie fan, and the whole outlaw country thing when it was first emerging. As my Dad put it, it was his "cosmic cowboy" phase. In other words, he was smoking a bunch of dope and drinking a lot. I suspect there was cocaine involved at times too. My Dad got sober in '79.

Willie is coming to town in a few weeks. I have never seen him, but feel like maybe I should. He's a legend, and can't possibly be around much longer. I can't say I am a fan, but I have also never heard a song of his I didn't like. And then there is that voice of his, nobody sounds like him. I think maybe I should go in honor of my dad, who passed in 2014. I know that sounds weird, but it somehow feels like I should.

Reports I heard from a few years ago said that the shows were pretty bad. But I've heard recently that his voice is good and he looks strong, so who knows
