Use a metal polish on the frets (like Flitz) which will leave a microscopic film to help prevent oxidation. Just don't use metal polish on anything electroplated (i.e. any gold hardware).

I don't know if I'd toss the case but I definitely wouldn't put my bass back in it. Keep it out on a stand or get a hanger and put it up on the wall. Eliminate one variable and see what happens. I play the basses that I keep out a lot more often than the ones in their case under the bed too...
