Cort Factory Controversy.

I keep hearing that many higher end basses are made in the Cort factory in South Korea. A guy who actually visited this factory also told me that Cort put a little more care into instruments that carry their own brand name.

Another factoid going around is that many fairly expensive "big name" basses are having necks and bodies made in the Cort factory and are then assembled in another country (such as the U.S.A), and are then labelled as "made in the U.S.A.

Has anyone else been hearing these things?

I know that the Lakland Skyline series is made at the main Cort facility in South Korea but that Lakland does alot of the finish work at their facility in the US....this is very clear on the labeling of Laklands

I do know that Lakland is VERY picky about the quality and does, at times, reject shipments for quality reasons.....also, they work closely with the Cort folks to make sure the Skylines are top notch...

....I cannot speak for other brands...

The only rumor like this that I have heard is that the Cort factory is building robot replacements for all the C.E.O.s of the big US companies, replacing them in their sleep and threatening to harm their family pets in order to keep the families quiet. Supposedly, Cort is doing this in order to facilitate a diabolical plan for a one world government, headed by Cort, in which the manufacture of bass parts is just the first step toward the enslavement of all mankind.

so.......THAT is what they are doing??? I was starting to wonder....:ninja:

The Fender Jazz 24 and 24V are also made by Cort.

The country of origin labeling is based on the percentage of labor done to a particular item in a location. I forget the actual numbers, but you can have something fabricated in China, then sent to the USA for finishing. If the work that is done in the US is more then in China, they can put made in the US on it.

I worked for a company that did that. We bought unfinished item from Taiwan and did most of the finishing work in the US. So we were able to say made in the USA.

That is kinda the opposite with Fender. They made allot of the bodies and necks for MIM instruments in the US, but the finishing and final assembly is done in Mexico....thus MIM

That's crazy talk!

But I do agree with you when you hint at robot domination of mankind in the near future:

Good sh-t.

An OEM item is only as good as the brand owner will accept. I recently got a G&L Tribute S-500 from the Indonesian Cort factory and it's well built, better than the USA Fenders I've seen, in my opinion.

If a company has product built for them, whether it is overseas or accross town, they have to be extremely diligent about quality control or the product will gradually become absolute crap. They can choose further cost reduction or high quality.

Well, duh. Did you ever wonder where they were getting the people to make Soilent Green? Where do you think the replaced Execs go?

Your goldfish is doomed.

You have to wonder about rumors, I heard that the Sadowsky NYC body and neck is built overseas and finished in the US and they are basically just a warehouse. Is there any truth to that at all?

I don't know about that. However, there is a rumor I've come across on the interwebs that before old man Sadowsky died, and the Illuminate replaced him with a sophisticated holographic artificial intelligence in order to keep the members of O.P.E.C. from freaking out upon learning of his death, mistaking it for an apocalyptic omen and raising crude oil prices to $200 dollars a gallon as a way to finance their planed bribery of the Devil upon his or her return, he had stockpiled a fortune in salvaged Spanish gold coins.

Apparently Sadowsky decided to hide the coins inside his Metro bass bodies thinking that no one in their right mind would pay $2000 for a MIJ bass and he'd be able to recover them later.

The only way to know if this is true one way or the other is if someone fires up a table saw and cuts up their Metro into tiny pieces...as the coins are supposed to be pretty small. Let me know how it goes.

Pretty much. Once the company makes sure the QC is good then I don't see any problems. I certainly wouldn't say there is any "controversy". Any MIK basses I've seen have been labelled as such or the manufacturer makes it clear, such as G&L, or Lakland.

The quality of some of the stuff out of Korea is unreal now. It really is the "new Japan".

Shocking. Simply Shocking.

Next thing you're going to tell me is that Fender doesn't build it's own MIJ instruments either. Oh the humanity!

Is it true that Sadowsky's Metros aren't hand built in Japan by Roger himself? I thought he went over there on vacation every few months and made leisure basses.

Your Korean bass expose is going to shake the Bass industry to the roots.
