Could this be a real 70's jazz neck?

A bass is for sale locally at a very good price. He knows its a parts bass, says the neck is US made from the 90's.

These are the only pics. Worth taking a chance on??

To my knowledge, only P bass necks had the truss plug in the late 70's. Jazz basses were bullet trusses.

The tuners with the registered 'R' logo are 72 to 76 tuners. But no Jazz ive ever seen has a truss plug.

And that brings me to that slab fretboard. There were no slab boards after 62. The the binding just doesnt look right where it terminates at the headstock.

So, I believe this is an old A profile P neck that somone converted to have a slab board and binding.

90s binding & dots with a thick slab ant the truss plug partially dissappeared?

eentewesteen.

wait, title says 70s, OP says 90s, I’m confused.

If the price is right for how it plays, buy it! Then paint the body and headstock Oly White like Lob intended.

OP Headstock:

Flat freboard bottom, walnut trussrod plug bisected by fretboard,, TV-logo, binding, dots with non-Fender size/spacing.

Early 70's Jazz headstock:

Curved fretboard bottom, no trussrod plug, TV Logo, binding, blocks.

Late 70's Jazz headstock:

Curved fretboard bottom, bullet trussrod, meets fretboard bottom but barely, late 70's Fender logo w/SN, binding/blocks.

My old TV-logo 73P didn't have a walnut plug either.

looks like a 3rd party neck, or a much later neck that's been worked over? What model/era Jazz neck has a walnut plug? Definitely the 60's basses don't nor the 70's or 80's.

The tuners, logo , and walnut plug look right for an early 70s jazz bass. I have a 72 with the walnut plug and those nickel tuners with the longer “stem”. However , my jazz bass has a maple fingerboard.

My take on this particular instrument is that someone simply wanted a rosewood board with dots and had the fretboard replaced.

I say it’s original. I also say you have to buy it.
