Okay so I bought me a Mim fender p bass that I just play at church, and found that the pickups seem really muddy, and like a roar. There is no clean tones just everything is muddy, and pingy sounding, like there is no depth. I am wanting that tight thick sound. Also I am playing through a peavey Maxx 115. Anyway, I am considering the spb4 Steve Harris signature pups, what do yall think about them?

Yes. Verify that it's the bass and not your rig or how you're EQing your rig, or the room acoustics.

If you're boosting the bass eq, set it flat. If you're cutting out all the mids, bring that up to flat also.

9/10 I've tried to fix muddy live bass tone for myself or someone else, the culprit has been over eager bass boosting or mid cutting

What do you mean by set it flat?

Yes I tried having gain up. But the more gain I try the more muddy and more like the notes aren't clear just everything is bunched together

the first volume is good for matching your basses output to the amps input ... helps max gain relative to noise floor ...

what about pickup height .? maybe raise the G string side a tiny bit , lower the low E string side a bit .??

does it still have the original strings ..?? they could be toast ...

maybe a compressor pedal ... tighten things up ... especially in a large room ..!?

try to play a bit closer to the bridge .!??

are you referencing the amps sound ... or the sound thru the PA ..?? is the amp close to a wall or corner , as that will re-enforce the lower end .? put something under the amp to decouple it from the floor ..?

all these things will affect low end / muddiness ... without touching the amps eq ... yet ..!

If you end up getting new pups, I'd say get Semour Duncan 1/4 pounders. I love the ones on my MIM p.... I kiss them when no one is looking.

That said, I agree with the other posts that the tone you describe sounds like something other than the pups themselves. What sort of strings are on it? Round? Flats?...Weedwhackers?

I haven't put new strings on them yet. The strings I have for it I have not put them on yet because I am putting new pickups in their. I plan on using elixir nanowebs
