Couple of Jazz tunes..

Hey Vince - I did check this out - it's not amazing to be honest - the recording is OK but none of the playing really stood out - how long have you been playing jazz? It's so difficult to play well - I know because I'm trying now myself, it is no walk in the park and something you can take 50 years to even get close to mastering. Personally I think you all need to groove a lot harder - or at least play with some conviction - you can mix this sort of thing any which way, it's not really going to improve the whole vibe of the thing. If I'm completely honest I didn't get an awful lot of pleasure listening to it - and beyond the technical crap about playing bass, or guitar, sax etc - you should at least try and make a good sound - I didn't get that from this.

I hope that was constructive enough for you - all I can say that would really improve this is creating more of a cohesive, group sound first - then worry about solos and crap later.

Never claimed we were the best jazz group around...far from it. But my point in putting it in the "recordings" section was to get some recording tips and feedback. Thanks for the musical suggestions - it was a rehearsal, and not intended to be a "solo" fest. The group is about playing "real book" and django jazz classics - we just started a couple of months ago, and we're getting hired on a weekly basis. So people (at least live) like us musically (and are willing to pay for it). That's not put there for boasting's sake - just to make a point that I really wasn't fishing for comments on the band...I'll let people/clubs vote with their wallet on that score (pun intended).

So not to be a brat - I'm really not worried about whether or not someone here is "grooving" to it as so many members of TB seem to only get into very technical soloing (or esoteric perfection) to be impressed - rather than just staying in the pocket and going from there. We had no percussionist that night, and it shows (not that it's an excuse).

Completely with you on the jazz thing - I love it, and I have a LONG way to go...

I guess I'm done posting recordings for recording tips here on TB...MUCH better forums elsewhere for getting recording advice...such as:

- try boosting/cutting xxx Hz...seems to open up this sound

- try using this technique to mic/blend X instrument

- We got great results using x and y with z and q

I do appreciate the response, M - just pretty disappointed, I misunderstood the title of the forum to mean actual recording, whether raw or polished....seems to be more of a "listen to the latest______ recording" or, "we just came out of the studio". All great stuff, but those trying to learn to record are kinda out of it.
