You NEED a gig. Your leeway to critique is minimal.
If I don't like the list then I don't audition.
You are getting a lot of good answers, you just don’t like them. That's an interesting audition strategy
Technically he was looking for people. One guy. A lineup hadn't even been formed yet.
This has been on my mind lately because it tends to happen a lot especially in cover bands. I was gonna audition for this cover band and the leader sent me some songs to practice. I wasn't particularly fond of his song choices and voiced my opinion about it. He then proceeded to mock my reading abilities saying I didn't read the bands he had listed in the ad. The bands weren't the issue the song choices were. I've had conflicts in the past with other cover bands I've been in where one of the members and I didn't see eye to eye on the song choices. Needless to say I don't think I got the gig haha. How do you guys deal with that? Do you just play what you're told? or do you speak up if you're not gelling with a song?
Yeah, he said we would change it up every show. The songs he picked I didn’t think were crowd pleasers.Doesn't matter. Did he say he was looking for help with his setlist?
You seem to be making it clear that you not liking some chosen songs is an issue. I don't play for fun so I guess I don't really know that dynamic but even if I were, limiting what I played to songs I like? Again... not a issue I'd have to deal with.
For the right money, whatever the BL wants. I went broke leading a band that played music I liked. Now I play music with people I like, with money I like, and audiences I like, and I'm the one trying to get Dancing Queen on the setlist. Life never lets you down.

That’s thing, I wouldn’t mind playing Abba or other crowd pleasers. The songs he was picking I wouldn’t think would work with the scene.
see that would be a blast doing a hard rock version of the chicken dance. This guy wanted to do turbo lover, round and round songs that the local radio plays to death. This is something that I think a lot of folks miss. And they're typically baffled at why they don't end up in better situations.
I've played "The Chicken Dance" with friends of mine for good money and the audience and the band had a ball with that silly little song.
What's a bigger priority... what you "feel like" playing or what the audience has a good time with? Sometimes they're not the same. Since I don't pay myself to play, I err on the side of what's paying. And I can still have fun.

I was hoping to do more fun songs that the band members could collaborate and make a fun set that everyone could agree on. I don’t make a living off of playing music. It’s a hobby, But it’s obvious most of TB is against me in this matter. I mean it’s just a cover band ffs.We did it as a polka... with funk elements.
If the guy wants to do songs you aren't interested in, what is the interest in the project?

I guess I just have a different way of looking at things. My first band was a cover band and we all picked our top 5 favorite songs we wanted to cover. It worked out great because if we didn't like a song we canned it and picked another one until we all agreed. I'm not even gonna bother with it anymore. I'll focus on my originals. I don't see how changing the set can be seen as a negative thing.I don't think anyone is "against" you. I'm saying that the way you handled this is not the way I'd handle it because to me, I tried to make sense of it and I can't, knowing what the results would typically be. I'm not sure why you're hung up on the pay aspect... was this advertised as a non-paying arrangement? Maybe I missed that.
Before you even get together with this person you bring a level of what can be seen as negativity. With nothing at stake. That doesn't bode well IME.
Well I do. We do originals with one cover that alternates every show.Since you have such strong ideas about what songs should be on your set list, why don't YOU start the band. Then see how it goes when people you audition tell you your set list won't work.
