This was actually a pretty good thread. It got everyone thinking at least.

Threads like this can be a learning experience.

Even if I don't think there's a right or wrong(Too much gray area), I will probably wait a while now before suggesting songs(If it's a gig that I want).

I have always gone into an audition with suggestions. Just enough to show I'm paying attention.

Now if I'm told we'll be playing Medleys... I'm walking. I can't stand medleys. "Oh, let's start a song then stop about 1/3rd through and start another one just as people are getting into the 1st one." That's just horrible for me to watch. YMMV

I hear ya... the only gigs where I have to play medleys, which are just playing usually shortened songs without a break in between, usually pay between $400-$600.

If I hate anything about a gig I typically keep it to myself and decide whether or not it's worth it in the future. Sometimes it isn't, most often it is.

Despite what you may think, people like the OP make it pretty easy to figure them out. They state exactly what they do. And people who have to resort to exaggeration; "everyone and everything figured out" are pretty easy to figure out too.

I know the less than one minute that it took for me to look at the OP again might be more of a hardship for others. I did it because I wanted to make sure that I got the gist of it before portraying it inaccurately. And I'm a quick reader.

And yes, I do have free time. Sorry yours is short... but apparently not short enough to not respond the multiple times that you did.

This is a bass forum on the internet. My advice given in this thread isn't limited to the OP... it's to anyone who might find themself in this kind of situation and doesn't really understand the dynamics of being a successful working musician.

As such, people state their opinions and others respond. If it's such a dead horse and you feel it's run its course, no offense...

why do you keep responding yourself? Is that not you beating the horse from your direction? It's like people who call for a thread to be closed because, well who knows why the heck they do it? Don't come back... it's the same result as it being closed with the benefit of still being around for folks who don't have a problem with it. A win-win.

I don't audition. If I get offered a dep job for a night, If I like the place, and the gig in general I'll say yes. When I arrive, if I'm lucky I like the music, but in most cases, the money is the key. If I get offered a no pay job, I usually turn it down unless I really fancy it, but if the pay is the usual for the area, then I don't care what I play. What I don't like are bad arrangements, where you know the next notes should be a F, but for some reason the arrangement has an A - when the original song was, in my head, so well known. It just jarres. My other dislike is when I'll maybe be playing for a show, and the musical director (ha ha) is useless and has written the parts out in a simplified way that ruins the song. This is when I pee them off by asking if they want me to play the music as written, or play it as the known recording. They don't like that. If I want the job badly, then if I did audition, I'd not say anything about the choice - until I got the job. If I was auditioning somebody to join me, then if they don't like what I ask them to play, then they can go away.

Wow...just...wow. I did not expect this thread to blow up the way it did. I just wanna say yes, I read everything and took a lot of what you guys said seriously. I was not in the best state of mind when I posted this thread and if I gave the impression that I'm a difficult person to work with I apologize. I'm not usually like this and pretty easy going most of the time. If I learned anything it's that I'm still a young musician with a whole lot to learn and a lot more maturing I need to go through. If anything I'm going on a hiatus from playing in any sort of band, no covers, no originals, nil. I still have school I need to finish and a lot of debt to pay off. Until such time I'm still gonna play my bass and practice as much as possible. Gonna stick to being a living room hero and doing demos.

When in Rome, do as the Romans.
It's their band, their set list. If they are talented players, I've always been able to slowly integrate songs I like into the set lists. Or just started my own band more than once and controlled the song list.
If I was in a cover band that only played songs I like, pretty sure with my quirky, eclectic taste in music we'd not have a whole lot of fans or gigs.
Lastly, I am always amazed that the most common, simple, overplayed songs seem to be the songs most liked and best received by the crowds. Go figure. At this point in my career, I'll pretty much play anything as long as it's played well and pays well.
If you are doing originals only, none of the above applies except for working with talented musicians.
