Cover Bands - What Do You Open With?

We play mainly '50s and '60s rock'n'roll. Lately we've been opening with "Rock This Joint" by Bill Haley but we've started shows with Elvis' "That's Alright" and a few with "Shake, Rattle & Roll" which also went well.

We do a slow, moody version of "16 Tons" which I would just LOVE to open a show with someday, but the rest of the band is not keen on the idea. They don't seem to be keen on seguing one song into the next either :scowl:

Did it sound like this?

that bass sounds massive! It was the studio version I was listening to last night (and again now :) )

as far as my band that was playing it in 1985... somewhere within our minds / egos I'm sure we thought we did ;)

I love Steve Winwood's stuff... any era!

I hit this thread because I just agreed to sit in Wed nights for a classic rock jam... lots of stuff mentioned here in the set list.

James 'I'm a Man' was on everyband's play list when I was kid in junior high school. And yea, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'd rather sing like Winwood than play like Hendrix. That voice is simply amazing. Here check this one out.

By my count Winwood was a teenager at the time this was recorded. That phrasing in both his voice and playing at such a young age is amazing to me. I'm guessing Spencer Davis felt like he'd won the freakin lottery when Stevie signed onboard.

In our "Bar Band" SHAGNASTY we usually rock the second set as normally the first set is too early for much of a crowd with any alcohol in them yet.
We may open the first set with
Riding the storm out - REO.

We open the second set with a compilation of complete songs non-stop:

American Band - Grand funk
Hemmorage - Fuel
Sweet Emotions - Aerosmith
Walk This Way - Aerosmith (With extended guitar Solo)

Of all the ones listed, I would start with these :

Hard to handle
Walk this way
Immigrant song

But both my bands are classic-modern-heavy rock oriented, and we start with these

Whole lotta Rosie
Never Again
Bark at the moon
I don't wanna stop
Where the streets have no name
