Covers Better Than The Original

Frankie Laine was from the earlier “Your Hit Parade” era, but went after the teen market in the early 60’s with this bit of schmaltz, surprisingly written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil…

Pretty forgettable(even with that fuzz guitar)until The Move(with tongues firmly in cheek)decided to pulverize it…

Join Mitchell is great, of course, but Mary Fahl has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and these bittersweet reminiscence songs are always better from a mature* artist.

*Not a dig at Joni Mitchell, but she was what, 25 when she recorded this?

 That's beautiful. Joni herself has said that singing the song in her young age was ok, but that it's better from (as you say) a more mature* :) point of view. So she kind of agrees. She reworked the song herself in 2000, with a version that's slowed down and pitched lower (as was her voice, with the years and too many cigarettes). It's quite beautiful and emotional, and though it requires a patient listening, it rewards that. Mary Fahl's version lands somewhere in the middle, and to me that's great, love it!
