Hello all.

How do I get this bass, it seem to be a lot about trust, but how can I get a guarantee from this guy?

Maybe you can convince him to list it on eBay or Reverb and you'll buy it through that platform. Offer to pay a higher price to cover his fees.

Just contact the lister and ask them to ship and pay them via PayPal. Worst they can say is "no."

I did this for a pedal a few years back and everything worked out fine. I realize more can go wrong, be more expensive to fix, and cost more to ship on a bass vs. a pedal, but PayPal is a good way of making sure neither of you (inadvertently or otherwise) screws over the other guy.

I’ve helped an overseas TBer buy basses that local sellers didn’t want to ship. He sent the bass to me, I sent it to him. This has been done multiple times. Granted, it takes a lot of trust, but maybe you can find an upstanding TBer to pick the bass up and send it to you

I’m in Orange County; if it’s local to me I’m happy to take a peek and report back.....when you say LA what part you talking? As others have said LA is big and getting to the otherside is a 2+ hour trek at times.

It’s been asked a few times with no response but what kind of bass are we talking about here?

Another option and probably the best one....there’s TONS of shops in the LA area. Have your seller take it to a shop for an “inspection” that you can offer to pay for in advance. If it comes back with a clean bill of health, then the deal is sealed. If not, you lost out on a few $ to maybe get your dream bass!

Very good suggestion about getting a shop to inspect it for you. My daughter made the mistake of buying a bass off ebay based solely on the photos and wouldn't you know it, when she got it the truss rod was jacked up, her great buy turned into a so so buy when she factored in the repairs it needed. And the problem was not evident in the photos.

She considered that and I suggested it, but it was a bass that she had been looking for and that wasn't that common so she didn't want to keep looking.

If you hadn't considered it, a price adjustment negotiation might have been manageable. Just saying a full return isn't likely the only possible outcome.

I have experienced this dilemma before. What I do is try to open up with a conversation on the phone and try to get a "feel" for some sort of legitimacy. That is still no guarantee he will ship but I can use that information to make my final decision. It's a tough spot to be in.

This is my thought, put out a post on what's up, see if there's a club for that area like we have the WI one. Maybe you could get a willing volunteer to assist. You could offer some amount of extra $$ for that person to get lunch to or something for their help?

If you're really intent on that particular bass it might work. I did that once but not through TB. Friend was in Milwaukee and the bass was near me (about 2 hrs away)

Get on a plane and go to LA. So it’s a $400 add on to the cost of the bass. Pretty cheap insurance to get exactly what you pay for. Otherwise, you are rolling the dice.

With the way of this world, I may never get on a plane again. It would still be worth it to me if it is in decent shape.
