Craigslist Scam

I have a bass cabinet for sale on CL. I got the email below from a responder. I know this is a scam but help me understand how it works for the scammer. I would love to figure out a way to harrass them.

from repsonder....
Thanks for the prompt response am quite satisfied with the condition .Am very much interested and i am really okay with the item and i will love to make an instant purchase,so please do withdraw the advert from Craigslist,i don't mind adding an extra $50 for you to take the advert down from craigslist so that i can be rest assured that am in hand of the item would have loved to come take a look myself but i am a very busy woman i am sure you understand. I will also like you to know that i will be paying via company certified check, and it will be sent via courier service due to the distance .You don't need to bother your self with the shipment okay,i will take care of that..............................So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.

1. Full Name on the check
2. Address where payment will be sent to not p.o.box (because my courier service does not deliver to p.o box)
3. City
4. State
5. Zip Code
6. Phone Number

Once again ,I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping i will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed the check .
Have a nice day
Samantha

How it works for the scammer is they send you a bogus "certified check", one that looks good enough for your bank to accept it. The check clears in your account, you think "hey great", and you hand the goods over to the thug who shows up on your doorstep.

A few weeks later, when the bank has discovered that they cannot collect the money from the bogus check, the bank removes the money from your account, and hits you with a bounced-check fee, and reports you to the police for passing a bad check.

Meanwhile "Samantha" has sold your item on Ebay. :)

I would pass on his offer to give you an extra $50 and tell him to have the mover show up with cash in hand!

I get offers to sell to people over seas all the time with credit cards. They are willing to buy large amounts of cables if I will take their credit card payment. Problem is they are stolen cards.

If a deal smells bad, it probably is

Todd :)

I got that too!

I googled the message and found a slew of folks that had that happen as well.

The deal is they send you a huge overpayment via fraudulent certified check. When you tell them it's too large they will ask that you send that remainder back once it is cashed which of course falls on you.

In short they sort of have an unsuspecting seller cash a fraudulent check for them and then move out once they get the amount over the sale. The guy I had this email from was supposedly in Arizona but had a Seattle area code!!!!

If you can figure a way to harass them back please let me in on it!!!

This is just wrong on every level!!!

Oh ... the funny thing is they use the same email regardless of what you are selling. They just change the name.

I had one of these when I tried to sell my old head via craigslist.

After a few emails back and forth, the guy claimed not to be able to talk on the phone due to being deaf. Obviously, I thought it was funny that a supposedly deaf guy was interested in a bass amp. Moron. I strung him along for a while, while pretending to be actually interested in selling to him.

WOW!! Same as mine! He actually called me through a relay service. I said send the check but I would have to have my bank hold it for 3-4 weeks to be sure it cleared. Never heard from him again.....

Ive personally gotten the check to see how good it is. My bank said there was no problem with the check. I called up the issuing bank in California and the without me saying the name on the check the teller said the name and the fact that the scam check happens every day of the week. The Fbi for whatever reason cant catch the people...long story short..if you deposit or cash the check it will bounce and you will be 100 percent accountable even though the bank ok'd it.
