Crazy Pickup Idea

Now like I said, this is crazy...

I have this Idea of a strange put possibly good combo of pups in a bass. Okay so it is, getting 4 jazz pups, and putting them parrallel to the strings, so one pup for each string.

would this work, or am I just being crazy

I saw somewhere on the net a scandinavian luthier did a one-stringed bass with a J pickup placed the way you described.

This will work, and you wight get very fat sound because of wide pickup aperture.

or maybe even a 5 string with a P pup and 3 J pups.

There was (is?) a manufacturer that uses 4 chrome Lipsticks in that manner, can't remember the make though.

I wonder if the string vibrations would cause some cancelling out. Either way, I'm a bit skeptical, considering the strings need to vibrate perpendicular to a coil - and this way, you're only exposing the "short side" of the coil to the string. But - it'd be worth a shot, IMHO.

If you think of a pickup coil as square or even circular, you can see why it would work.

It's really all about the strings cutting through the lines of flux from the magnets.

ERRG. Right. I completely forgot what magnetic flux looks like. Figuers that nothing from Electromagnetics 101 would stick to a compsci student like me.

I don't see the point in that one. I think they just couldn't find 7 string pickups.

That's what I was thinking about the whole thing, David. Way too much magnetic pull on the strings. Probably be a bitch trying to play in tune.

Even number of strings: Humbucking. Odd number of strings, not so much.
