I just added a Redeemer Circuit to my MTD Z5 bass. Man what a difference it made. I thought I had it as good as it was going to get with the Nordstrand DC5's, and the Audere 4 band EQ. I bought this at the Texas Guitar Show today after hearing a demo through a Skjold bass. I decided to give it a try. The difference is like day & night. Not a subtle difference either. The difference is quite noticeable. Chords in the lower registry sing out with a clarity like I have never heard before. When I turn the volume down I no longer loose my highs, and it doesn't become muddy like it used to. The funny thing is I never really noticed what I was missing until I installed the Redeemer. This thing is simply amazing.

hmm.. I always hated losing highs when the volume pot got turned down...

But I thought there was a simpler "treble bleed mod" around, though? I forgot where I heard about it, but it was simply soldering another capacitor to the volume pot or something..


There might be a simpler way to to solve that issue, but I assure you the Redeemer does so much more.

It sounds like the Redeemer is a buffer.
 
Seriously. I would not doubt the OP's comments for even a second if his bass had been passive before, but I don't see how lowering the output impedance more from an active bass would make any difference. Plus, the whole business about losing highs when you turn down- that's only with passive basses. I've owned two Auderes, and I am 100% positive there was no loss of highs when turning down the volume.

am thinking of getting the boost pedal they make (essentially the Redeemer in a pedal) for a couple of passive basses that sound great but have kinda low output Aeros in them.

as for in an active.... my Bongo, he don't need no help, he's gnarly as it is :bassist::bassist::bassist:

that being said, I have heard a bass w/Nords and an Audere pre that I thought was just not the best possible combination to have at all so maybe that's what's going on with your set-up.

regardless, you like the tone MUCH better and that's what counts!!
 
I may be a skeptic...but, I believe that the Loch Ness monster has been abducted by a UFO while having dinner at Bigfoot's house. But that's ok, Santa Claus will save him after he's finished washing the Easter Bunny's carrots.

Fixed. ;) Actually I'm still interested to find out if I'm wrong about that -I've been wrong before ;)- it's just that what this guy is reporting may have been a trick of the ears. He made a change and wanted it to sound like an improvement, so it does. I'm not saying that's the end of the story, maybe there really is some change, but it seems unlikely is all.

I want to try one of these anyway, since I have a passive bass that could benefit from it- so maybe I'll buy a Redeemer and put it in a little true-bypass box and see if my active bass sounds different through it. That way it's possible to A/B more realistically. And if I don't add an LED then it can even act as a blind test!

I think you should go for it! I am interested in the results... but not $123 interested ;) I can't see how it would help an active instrument.

I was thinking maybe it had some static EQ, a treble boost?, but the phase shift seems to low. Everything about the specs screams simple buffer or maybe a slight gain. Low distortion, low phase shift, excellent frequency response, high battery life.

I'm 100% positive I did hear a difference. You don't have my bass nor did you hear my bass before the Redeemer was installed. I know for a fact that there was a noticeable difference, and not because I 'wanted' to hear a difference either.

yes...on a passive instrument I have no doubt...but on an active, I am QUITE skeptical...

and moreover, I'd venture to say that if you took out the tone pot and volume pot on a passive (straight to jack) you'd be 90% of theway of a redeemer ...

it's no more than a high impedence buffer...a way over-priced one at that...

Now I'm using small outboard impedance buffer attached to strap using velcro.

Just some info here as it seems it is not understood what the redeemer is doing .

It does not effect the impedence pre output such as your pickups and pots . It maintains and corrects the loading that happens when you use a cable , amp input or DI or stomp pedal . If your battery goes dead it dosn't kill you signal like a normal buffer it just simply stops maintaining the impedence and allows the load through to you preamp , pickups and pots . I have worked with buffers ever since 1993 with my first set of Lane Poor pickups . I have commisioned EMG and Seymour Duncan to make me discreet buffered gain stages for the Lane Poor pickups I was using them . They are completely different in function than the redeemer . In simple terms it can be called a buffer but it doesn't function as a traditional buffer . As far as price the 120.00 is a reatil price and not the selling price .

Anyway , I know this won't sway those of you who are convinced as to what the redeemer is , but I felt I should just chime in . BTW , I demoed the Redeemer with both active and passive basses and it does effect both . Much more on the passive but since it effects the load coming into the bass and doesn't react with the buffers that are already inplace on an active bass it can still correct any loading that is occuring .

Pete, with all due respect, a buffer is any device that presents a high impedance load for the pickups, and a low impedance load to drive the cable. It isolates--buffers--the pickups from the cable, and/or controls. Technically speaking anything that does that job is a buffer. Almost all active devices used for audio have a buffer on the front end. This is true of a bass preamp with active tone controls, or your amplifier. The thing you want is to get the buffer as close to the pickups as possible, and before the cable.

On the old thread I had commented that I felt the Redeemer was a simple buffer, and apparently the people at Creation Labs say it's not. They also said it's not a transistor or op amp... but that leaves no other class of active devices. They also claim it's patent pending, but I looked, and they did not file any patent application I could find.

I felt the claims were rather outrageous, especially the one about getting more sustain because of the lack of loading on the pickups, which they claimed also loads the strings. And that's just not possible. If that were the case, a bass with no pickups or even just unplugged from the cord would sustain more, and that doesn't happen.

The one thing I did not try was disconnecting the battery from the Redeemer. I was more interested in seeing if it sounds any different from a FET or op amp buffer you can make for under $10. I had commented that a simple FET buffer would do the same thing, and sound the same as the Redeemer.

So a forum member (cybersnyder) was kind enough to loan me (and very patient since I had the thing much longer than intended) a Redeemer to try out.

So without further ado, here is a shoot out of some active devices. You can be the judge. I'm doing this as a blind test, with a clip of the bass run passive as a control. Any distortion or buzz heard is from my recording levels, and not the devices, and the buzz is due to all these things not being in a shielded control cavity. One device was slightly hotter than the rest, but I did not change recording levels at all during the tests, which were done one after another.

All clips were recorded with the same bass (SGD Scorpio 5 string with Neo Series 3 pickups) plugged directly into a Roland Digital mixer and recorded into TC Works Spark XL. No EQ was used at all. The signal was entirely in the digital domain. The pickups are running through a 500K blend and 500K volume pot. The volume was on full. The tone did not change with any of the units when I turned the volume down, which is a hallmark of a buffer.

I tried to play basically the same run each time. I played the bridge pickup first, then the neck, and then both.

Besides the passive clip, you will hear the Redeemer, an EMG BTC set flat, and a FET buffer. The clips are in random order and only marked A, B, and C.
