Crest ST2000 or QSC PLX 3002?

oddio said:
As I have no direct experience with the Crest I can only mention that I am extremely impressed with my PLX3002. It's extremely reliable, and has some very well thought-out features like switchable filters and limiters - which make it ideal for use as a bass power amp.

i agree with this post. furthermore, it's light, powerful and clearly reproduces the tone of my conklins through my aguilar. i highly recommend this amp. :hyper:

If you're looking for prices and availability on Crest amps, give "Justin" a call at Abracadabra Pro Sound. I think that's the name and I think they're out of NY or NJ.
He's the one that worked out the killer price on the ST.

And Mr. Turner, yours was one of the first posts that I read about the PLX 3002 and it was a great review. If the ST isn't exacltly what I'm looking for, it will indeed by my next choice.
(knods to Mr. Turner... turns and presents ritual offering at the alter of Conklin)

i decided to resurrect this thread for three reasons:

1. mjmorgan never posted the review he promised of his new ST2000; and

2. there is a new thread comparing ST v. PLX that i thought could benefit from a review of the ST; and

3. i bought a crest Pro 7200 recently for an undisclosably killer price (benefits of working for the manufacturer, err, peavey).

i ordered a Pro 7200 which was supposed to arrive yesterday, but a legacy Pro 7001 (similar power, more sensitive, twice the weight) showed up instead. i should have the 7200 soon enough, though. i was so crestfallen when i realized i got the wrong amp yesterday. actually, it was when the guy handed the carton to me and it was way heavier than i was expecting.

robb.

I will as promised post a review of this power amp when I have the opportunity to put it through it's paces.
I received it just two days before I went "out of town" for a few months on my real job.
I'm currently somewhere that's very hot, dusty, and prominently featured on the news on a daily basis.
I did manage to find access to an internet terminal and of course had to catch up on TB only to find my reputation in question.
I'm scheduled to return home in a couple weeks and after the appropriate decompression time (not to mention some time with the wife) I'll post a detailed report.
I will not let my TB brothers and sisters down.
Thanks,
Matt

After a few days of putting the ST2000 through its paces with the gear listed below here's how I sum up the ST:
A: Tons of power. It puts out up to 500w into each of my EAs and I can barely turn the amp or my instrument volume up without doing bodily harm. I have no doubt that it can put out its advertised power of 1000w per channel at 4ohms. I perceive it to be more powerful than the LT but I haven't pushed it anywhere near its limits and I have no real intention to either!
B: Exceptionally quiet and clean. No hum, no hiss, nothing...noticeably quieter than the LT1500 and I thought that was really quiet.
C: Typical Crest fan noise..noticeable in a quiet practice room and I'm sure it wouldn't go over well in the studio but in a live environment , you'd have to turn around to see if it was on or not.
D: Runs totally cool..no warm air being pushed at all even after long, higher volume sessions.
E: Tone -The ST is sonically different than the LT series in a couple respects. 1) The ST has a somewhat softer "attack" than the LT. 2) It has a smoother and slightly less "edgy" sound to it. I've found that I have a little more discretion to adjust the tweeters in the EAs, the treble setting on my pre-amp and the treble on my basses. With the LT, I had them all rolled off a bit and there was plenty of "bite". The LT was very bright and almost a little "clacky" if that's a word? The ST isn't dull by any stretch of the imagination but it's more "what goes in comes out only louder". No tonal input from the ST. 3) The ST lacks some of the "grunt" of the LT and is very even across the frequencies. The LT could really dish out almost an "old school" kind of low mid "oomph" that the ST doesn't allow or smooths out I should say. The ST is very consistent.
F: Weight - the ST is significantly lighter than the LT and has made an enormous difference in my rack weight. It's much easier to carry and stack now.
G: Overall - ST gets a big thumbs up! If you can find one, snatch it up. You won't be sorry!
I hope this answers the mail and man is it good to be home and playing again! Real life experiences always put the joy of being able to play bass in perspective for me.
All of you take care of yourselves, each other, play for the love of it and be thankful for the blessing of being able to play.
Thanks, Matt
