Cricket World Cup 2007

I often wonder what they actually say when they go about their sledging in international teams ...guess we'll never get to know all that much about it, but your story sheds some light.
Officially there is no sledging. Funny how upset the players get when the stump mics aren't turned off between deliveries..........

Ian Healey's sledge on Ranatungs was pretty memorable. Ranatunga called for a runner, supposedly because he'd hurt himself fielding. No-one was buying it except Ranatunga.. and the umpires. Healy pointed out "There's nothing in the rules about getting a runner for being a lazy fat c*^#". That one DID come over the stump mic.

When I played cricket, we seemed to spend more time sledging each other then the opposition. They were good times :)

I'm looking forward to the first game against New Zealand, even more now - after they slumped to defeat against Bangladesh and England bowled well in their warm-up! :)

I am having the day off work and shall watch every minute on Sky TV!
:) I love how the English read into match results.

A win is read into like this:
"How good are we! We can beat anyone now!"

A loss is read into like this:

" (cricket's chirping) "

No punn intended. It's a warm-up game. Sure the players try hard but without the heat of a real battle, it's not any indication of anything.

Alright, it's prediction time. Leave your partiotism out of it and tell me who will win this World Cup. I have a sneaky suspicion it might be India.

I think you're entirely wrong - when we lose we're the first to be vocal about it, the first to give our team a slating and the first to laugh about just how bad we are. I think the cricket world knows that the least graceful losers are Australia. Very well balanced though - a chip on each shoulder.

My prediction? Still with NZ despite their loss. That will be their one blip and then they'll win the cup. I think someone like Ireland or Kenya is out to surprise us too though, maybe by getting past the group stages and to the quarter or semi finals.

You're generalising. I'm talking about internet forums. The Ashes 05 thread was full of Englishmen. Where were they all for the Ashes 07 thread? They were no-where to be found until England managed a few wins at the very end of the ODI season.

And I'm cool with being called a bad loser. Not that I think I am, nor do I think that Australians are in general. The fact is we have won so often over the last decade that when we do occasionally lose, every non-Australian we know see's it as their chance to finally give us a verbal bashing. The minute we open our mouthes in retaliation, or even to try and say we didn't deserve to win, we only get half way through the sentence and people imediately start pointing fingers at us and calling us bad losers. The truth is, it's just jealousy, sour grapes, whatever you want to call it.

My Indian friend is particularly bad. At a recent BBQ, we ganged up on him and pressed him for his definition of how a "good Aussie loser" would behave. Without actually saying it, he suggested we'd have to turn on our team and stop supporting them. No way that's going to happen. If that's what being a good winner is, I'm prefer to be labled a bad loser.

That same BBQ got a bit D&M. We had people from all corners of the globe sitting around the table discussing why Aussies are so passionate about sport. The consensus was we're so darn small in the global scheme of things, we can't compete economically, politically, and militarilly with a lot of countries. The one place we can be competative is on the sports field, so as a nation was grasp at it.

i think Australians are seen as bad losers because there fans often leave before the games over when there losing
Is that seriously what it is? I never leave early but I can tell you why lots of people do - If you lived here you'd understand just how dreadful our public transport system is compared to other countries. If you can beat the crowds, you do.

What I can't understand is how good the public transport was for the Olympics on 2000. We got it SO right then, but as soon as the games were over, we were back to where we started. Since then, things have become worse.

You're generalising. I'm talking about internet forums. The Ashes 05 thread was full of Englishmen. Where were they all for the Ashes 07 thread?.

That's because we had a full team in 05 and the matches were in England so it was possible to watch all of them.

Whereas for 07 - our team was ravaged by injury and had no chance - plus it was in Australia, so the time of all the test matches was precisely when I am deep asleep!

So for those two reasons, I don't think any English fans watched, so there was no point in commenting.

By the time of the ODI series - some of our better players wer getting back to fitness and form, plus the day/night matches were timed so that we could actually see the climax live on TV at a time when we were awake!

Simple really and nothing to do with the kind of reasons you are trying to make up!! :p

I can vouch for that! It's so true....6hrs, 45 mins of cricket and 6 hours of travel to and from!!!!

Oh ok so I may as well not watch this world cup because our team is ravaged by injury and the time difference means I'll lose a wink of sleep. Your sacrasm-meter should be off the charts right now.

That's pretty weak Bruce. You're talking to a guy from a Country where million of sports fans went without sleep for the Ashes 05. Heck we did the same for the Football World cup even though we had absolutely no chance of winning. Some of my best memories of last year are at our local sports bar at a rediculous hour cheering on the socceroos one goal at a time.

Face it, no-one likes watching their team lose at an international level. We Aussies get singled out but we're no different to anyone else.

It was kind of weird watching the Tri Series final, when it came to the presentation to Flintoff it was like a ghost-town and the sponsors seemed really embarrassed!! :p
It had been raining all day. People were cold and wet and miserable about it. I missed the final because I was at a gig.... meaning it was night time and late. Again, with public transport being as bad as it is, people wanting to get home (and dry off) before breakfast went home. On the way they told each other we didn't deserve to win .........

Hmmm... And England loss yesterday is followed by - you guessed it:

" Crickets chirping "

As I've said earlier it's only a warm-up game and should not be read into too much. But you can't deny the on-line English reaction to the Aussie Warm-up game was decidedly different to the previous warm-up game...........

Oh and was I right about Stuart Clarke! He WILL replace Glenn McGrath as the miser of the bowling attack. 3-16 is a great effort at any level!

And the World Cup 2007 is officially under way. YAAYYYYYY! Windies beat Pakistan today in Game 1!

Good to see the hosts first out of the blocks with a win.

There'll be a fair draining of the rum stocks that's for sure.

If the Pakis keep on playing like that, they won't have to worry about too many non-English interviews.

The buzz is that 250 on these WI wickets will be hard to chase!!!

Yep that seems to be the case. We'll have to watch the pitches and see if they flatten out and get harder over the course of the tournament. If so, we might see some bigger scores.

Kenya beat Canada today in the battle of the minows. Austr beat Scotland easily as expected, but sooner of later one of these "minows" is going to pull off an upset and throw the whole tournement on it's head. Who will it be?
