Cricket World Cup 2007

I didn't see that either, unfortunately. Is that the first one since Gary Sobers did it, or has someone else done it in between?

Have a looksy:

A quick google search shows Ravi Sahastri has done it too, though I can't seem to find out when and against whom.

Gibbs' is first ever in a World Cup. Dare I say it, the next time it happens will also be in a world cup as long as developing cricket countries continue to take part.

Pakistan are finished!

Well, they don't need to be worried about speaking English for the interviews - their next interview will be the exit interview!

That team, and their cricketboard have some real problems.

Their in-fighting, cheating ( Ahktar was "not" on drugs ) and arrogance has caught up with them

Just heard the news that Bob Woolmer, the coach of Pakistan Cricket team died in his hotel room. They suspect a heart attack at this stage.

Woolmer played for England

This death is right after their defeat at the hand of Ireland. I just heard the Irish coach on radio news saying that despite the disappointment, Wulmer was in good spirit and shaking hands of the irish team all round etc etc right after that match and then departed to his hotel room. He was found unconscious in his room but died shortly after.

So sad and no doubt this will be a schock to all teams in the ICC World Cup.

R.I.P. Bob Woolmer

Is it possible the protests put him under so much pressure they contributed to this?

Maybe - but I see the Police are looking into it so there may be more than meets the eye.

Woolmer is reported to have been a diabetic. I have a type 1 diabetic son. With the reported blood on Woolmer and vomit found on his room walls, doesn't sound like anything to do with diabetic lows ( coma ) - but you never know.

Gosh that link you gave makes scary reading. You have to wonder about the psychological state of some of those people who make such ridiculous protests and demands.

Agreed, that's why it was emailed to me. And supposedly us Aussies are bad losers? We've never burnt effigies or been violent when we've lost. We've certainly never had an official die with rather suspicious timing..........

My friend from India summs it up nicely:

"the indian/pakistani/bangledeshi population are the silliest sporting publics on the planet. In saying that i understand why. One minute they are worshiping them, the next minute they are burning the players houses down. I bring it down to the fact that most of them stuggle just to get through everyday life and it is cricket and the movies stars that bring them joy - and thats all they have. When it does not go their way, this is the reaction. Im not making excuses, that is how it is - it will never change. And you will never understand it utill you go there and see for yourselves".

My friend from India sums it up nicely:.

Funny that - I have an Indian lad working for me and he said almost exactly the same thing - except - he left the word India out!

I asked him why he did not mention India and he just gave me a beaming smile.......

Even more funny, he's a rarity - he can't stand cricket!!!! I even offer him free tickets to the ODI's - "thankyou, that's so kind of you, please excuse me from coming along, I would not be good company as I don't like the game"

He was one of our best ever players - although never seemed to get the credit...?

I can remember seeing him get big hundreds and then bowl as well! I think he might have been overshadowed by the Botham phenomenon and the fact that he seemed to be a quiet shy person, at a time when it was more acceptable to be a hellraiser - (Freddie is clearly out of his time!! ;) )

From the BBC website :

Bob was one of the world's greatest coaches and as a player his innings of 149 in the series in 1975, and lasting more than eight hours against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, demonstrated not only how talented a player Bob was but also his pride in wearing the England sweater.

It's becoming a bit of an eventful World Cup - luck of the Irish on St Patrick's day, Bangladesh beating India, Gibbs Six 6s in an over,Flintoff demoted and left out for boozing, the tragic death of Bob Woolmer and Inzamam retiring.

What's going to happen next?

And it hasn't really started yet!!

So what happens in Vaughan's injuries flare up again? Who's going to skipper the team? Surely it'll be Freddie? A World Cup is no place to be blooding in a new captain. The demotion is a "nothing" punishment, as is the match ban against.... wait for it... Canada.

Would a younger player have gotten off so lightly?

My first question was "Hmmm, I wonder if they'd have been so quick to give him a match ban if the next match was Australia or South Africa?"...

...somehow I think not.

Well we've just found an Indian who despises cricket! Now I've seen everything. Nothing can shock me now :)

I love it when the Indians come to play in Australia. The fans are nuts, but in a good way. I love how the the rest of the world will bring a sign they made at home with paint and an old bed sheet, but the Indian kids will instead bring blank sheets of cardboard and a black texter and make up slogans on the spot. Every time something good happens, say a wicket falls, these kids drop to the floor and write something about the incoming batsman. It's sometimes something funny like "The only Aussie Highlights are in Michael Clarke's hair", but usually it's something where the humour doesn't translate to English like "India for Winner, even after dinner!" :)

Same here - they are the most exciting matches to go to.

If NZ smacks a 6, the Indians surrounding you smack you on the back - "Blaardy great shot - we're going to make heaps of runs!" If one of NZ goes out, smack on the back "Blaaardy good ball, no denying we're on a roll here!"

NZ gets a wicket "Blaaardy good ball, no denying we're on a roll here!" and NZ gets smacked for a 6 "Blaardy great shot - we're going to make heaps of runs!"

They are just on "cricket's side" and the whole match is one big party.

When their neighbours tour, the atmosphere at the match is quite dour and oppressive. The Police have their hands full then that's for sure.
