Crimes Against Cabs - Rehab Help Request

So far, it’s looking way better!


I’ve restored a lot of cabs. Old cabs can be quite funky, issues with the wood, edge round over not quite right, rot, delamination, cracks, loose seams, chunks missing, out of square, even dimensions off. Anything can be fixed, but it can take a lot of work. It’s such a pleasure to work on a new cabinet that doesn’t have all the “character” built in. :laugh:

Did you let it cure more? For future reference, you dont need all the shims, just need it held until cured. I would do something like get a flat surface on one side, cover in waxed paper, perfectly flat, then fill from the other side. Either way, you nailed it! Well actually, you glued it!

Had to cut down 16 screws with a hacksaw to get the length I wanted but the speakers are back on and solid as a rock. Speaker fabric and the name plate are on and looking good in my opinion, I'll probably trim the fabric back more when I install the baffle. Going to call Acrytec today and see if I can get the custom color Duratex I want for the exterior. I only need to cover 13.12 square feet (3.99 sq meters) so I'll ask them if a quart will be enough for two coats.

New handles (2 x $8.69) and corners (8 x $0.69) are on the way, I was surprised how inexpensive they are. Couldn't locally find any baffling material I liked so I ordered that as well.

I managed to find some pictures that show what it originally looked like. It was a beaut, that's for sure. Too bad mine was so badly abused.

The original cabinet had piping around the baffle. Some fabric stores sell this. It can be either a tolex thickness material or heavier vinyl.

Here is an example. The diameter of the pipe varies depending on the product. It is stapled along the baffle edge. Notching the band (I cut small triangles out) and heat helps in forming the tight corners.

Fantastic, I bought an extra piece of speaker fabric to have some artwork done on so I can replace my plain one at a later date and I can add the piping when I swap them out. Thank you for the link.

Do you have any pictures/examples of your work somewhere I can look at? The MDF is in good shape all the way 'round as far as I can tell, and I didn't bash any of the nice routed edges off over the years.

+1 on the through bolts. I suggest adding a metal frame on the inside. The gasket could be used as a template.

I use through bolts on all my cab wheel installations.

Damn, sorry to hear that. Hurts more than the flu shot eh? :D Last spring or late Winter I got the stinkin' animal flu. The regular flu shot covers three strains, and not the strain I got the SUPER FLU!!! So this year I insisted on the better shot and it covers all four at a double dose. Even with tamiflu after day 1, I lost 20 lbs in a week.

Yeah... For some reason I forgot the flu shot this year and ended up with Captain Tripps. I dropped ten pounds, ate so much chicken soup and drank so much tea that my body forgot how to digest solid food, and the doctors best advice was "suck it up, buttercup".

I never knew flu shots were a la carte, does the doctor bring the hypos out on a nice silver tray and offer three course, or four courses? Seriously though, definitely getting the flu shot next year.

Tamiflu isn't covered by my health insurance, a friend at work had to pay cash for his wife and kids to get it a couple years ago when the flu shot didn't work. I think it cost him almost a thousand bucks back then.

Back to business: I'm going to put it back together today and give it a listen. Pretty excited about that.
