Critique My New Band

I have ended up playing in an original band for the past year. Didn’t really want to do it but the singer who is a friend, asked me too. Now it has turned out to be one of the most fun projects I’ve ever been involved with. Great people, great songs, and I think I actually enjoy bass more than guitar. I’ve started taking bass lessons which has helped as well.

So, now we have started some recording and just put our first single out. It was recorded in a day with very few overdubs. I’m posting it hear because I’m proud but also because I’m curious what people think who weren’t involved in making it. So, tell me what you think about the song, the performances, and the recording. And don’t hold back.

Nicely done! Anyone that puts in the time to write and record their own music gets props from me. It’s not easy to do, much less do well. The song sounds well recorded and mixed, though I would have liked a little more mid harmonic content for the bass so it’s easier to hear on tiny mobile device speakers (which is what a lot of folks will listen on). The song composition follows tried and true formula so will feel familiar to the music consuming public and I don’t mean that as a negative. Sounds like you have a good thing happening!

Thank you and I agree. I wish the bass had more definition instead of blending in with every else. I used a USA P bass with TI flats. The engineer plugged me into an API. I think it was a preamp. It sounded very warm in the room but in the future I need to figure out how to make the bass stand out more. Thanks again.

Salud!

Sounds very good to me!

I don't like the rhythm guitar tone that much, but that's a totally personal opinion, of course. And the solo has to my ears too many Sweet Child of Mine vibes.

I don't think you can do ANYTHING to make the bass stand more in a recording, because that's the engineer, producer and mixing person's job. You just give them a good performance with good tone. And give them your opinion, of course.

Good job! Following on Spotify.

Great song! Your lines are steady when they need to be and melodic. Perfect example of knowing when to serve the song and then stretch out a bit when appropriate. You SHOULD be proud of it!

Just one thing… while listening to the intro, I kept hearing “It Don’t Come Easy” (Ringo Star). But there’s nothing wrong with that.

Nice work
