Double Bass Crooked bridge

Hello all
just noticed the bridge on my rented upright is somewhat crooked.
I had just swapped out this one for an older beat up version of the same model. I know if I loosen strings, I can just straighten it out. BUT the last time I worked on the last bass I had, I swear I caused the sound pole to fall out. I really don't want to mess with getting that pole back in.

Question is 1) Would this crooked bridge affect playability/tone.2) If I slightly loosen strings and straighten out bridge would I mess with the action too much or run the risk of dropping the sound pole again?

I know this may be obvious but I am a seasoned electric player and pretty clueless with an upright in the maintenance department.

Tune the strings down a whole tone and you should be able to gently but firmly re-position the bridge without losing the sound post.
