I really wanted one of these 1500's, but if it's going to be 550w into each of my 4 ohm cabs instead of the 775, it wouldn't make sense, even though it would be loud enough. My cabs can handle a bit more. Even the 1000w unit would only be sending 325watts into a 600w cab. That sounds like a good way to blow the speakers with the amp distorting. Anyone agree?

They go down to 2 ohms stereo not 4.

If it would be loud enough, whiy wouldn't it make sense?

According to the online manual, you can set a frequency every 1/12 octave from 50Hz to 3kHz to use as a crossover, low-pass, or high-pass point. So yes, running in Stereo/HighPass/70Hz mode sounds like what you are looking for.

Although that may be what the speakers say, I suspect that you will still be getting frequencies below that out of your cab, so you may want to set that HFP to a lower frequency... say like 50hz... or not even use it at all IMO

I picked up the XLS 1500 today. I had been running my RBI thru my Kustom 1200. I don't know why, but the RBI now seems more responsive as far as eq. The tone seems a little warmer, not so edgy. I'm running the amp - input Y with high and low filters bypassed. I tried the filter set at 50hz., (as low as it goes) but the cabs seemed to lack the bowel moving lows that are so clear thru the Aggies. The chain is RBI out to Maxcom compressor/maximizer, out to amp. Each channel out to - Aggie GS212 and Aggie S410. I love being able to run the cabs at different levels, and to be able to compare them by just twisting the gains. I shaved 26 lbs. from my 6 space rack today! I'm very happy with the Crown so far.:D

You can even use the rca inputs to jumper the two channels. Keep in mind that when you jumper the inputs, your input level to each channel will be reduced (each channel will only get a portion of the input signal rather than the full signal going to each channel). This is one of the reasons the Drivecore XLS didn't work for me. The reduction in input level (to each channel) caused by jumpering the inputs, coupled with the reduction in gain from using the unbalanced input (fed from an Alembic F-2B), along with my power-hungry Acme cabs, and I just wasn't getting enough volume

I now know that I should have used 'Input Y' mode instead of jumpering the inputs, and I also need to use an adapter cable to allow me to connect my preamp's unbalanced output into the power amp's balanced input. With this knowledge, I'm confident that the Drivecore would have worked for me.

Also, if you don't have a power amp with an Input Y mode, and you do need to jumper the inputs (for parallel mono operation), it's recommended to send your signal into the power amp's balanced input and then jumper the power amp's 1/4" inputs using a cable with TRS connections.

Newb questions: Never used separates but at this price am toying with the idea of running a VT Deluxe into this amp. Would I be better off bypassing the filters or cutting off everything below a certain floor, like 30-50Hz? Will a generic 1/4" suffice between pre/pedal and amp, and the usual speakon to speakon between amp and cab?

hi-pass at 40Hz is what I would use if running stereo or dual mono in a bass rig
but I read in here somewhere that the the filter in this crown does not allow that value

generic 1/4" I take it you mean a typical instrument cable, with tip-sleeve connection
for a short distance like from a pre to power amp in a rack it is just fine
and speakon between amp and cab as usual

No soldering needed. In bridged mono, the Speakon plug at the amplifier end of the cable must be wired to 1+ and 2+, , and plugged into the # 1 Speakon output on the amp. This is equivalent to using the two red binding post terminals. Once you pull the end off the speakon, you will notice that you won't have to solder anything.
