Crown Macro Tech 2400 vs QSC PLX 2400

A sound guy I am aquanited with is selling some gear and keeps trying to push his Macro Tech on me when I have the QSC. The QSC is lighter and can run in mono in 2ohms where the spec sheet on the crown is confusing if it can or not.

He thinks it will be a big improvement in my subs. Is he just trying to unload his amps or is he correct?

There is no denying that Macro Techs are legendary amps that are built like tanks and could very well be the top touring and fixed install amp of the last 25 years. However, they are heavy, loud (in terms of fan noise, not audio), and old. For a fixed install I would still use them but for a portable system they are outdated.

Will the Macro Tech sound better than your PLX? Theoretically yes. Will you be able to hear the difference? Probably not in any meaningful way. And with the price of lightweight, modern amps being so reasonable now it's hard to recommend buying used.

if you mean bridge into 2 ohms, neither amp can do that (very few can).

macros are tanks and weigh like it. they rock, but i don't wanna lift it out of the van either.

Powering subs the Macro will destroy the PLX....no question about it.

The difference will be audiable and you will feel it.

Now, the real question is do you want to deal with the added weight??!!

I have owned every available model PLX series amplifier, still use (2) PLX3002 for monitor duty, but for use on subs....they are just lifeless.

Also...the Macrotech is 1050w @ 2ohms per channel.

yeah, bridging into 2Ω basically means running each side at 1Ω!

now, just running a 4Ω load into each side at the same time is fine, but that's not actually hitting the amp with a 2Ω load.

A couple of years ago, we ran a QSC 3602 in stereo mode. 2ohm on one side powering two 4 ohm subs, and 4 ohm on the other running 2 8ohm mains. Now, we run it bridged at 4ohms just two our subs. It seems perfect. We love the amp, but have never run a Macro Tech. We now have a 3402 on our mains as well, running 2 ohm stereo. We usually end up on one 20A circuit, and have had no problems at all. Keep in mind the nice warranty of the QSC.
