All right, I don't have any clips, not even photos of my personal unit.

Just wanted to say that Hot Cake is the best overdrive on bass I've ever had - it's pretty dark but natural sounding OD, can also be used as clean boost with drive control all the way down.

I really wonder why it isn't more popular here.

i've been thinking bout buying one.....its one of the few i haven't owned/tried. is it possible to compare it to another od pedal in terms of similarities? how is the low end retention. any roll off of highs?

Current production Hot Cake has internal trimpot for guitar/bass mode, so there is no low end loss. It's pretty fat and dark sounding OD, so you won't get that trebly bite some guys are after. I used Hot Cake today in the band and it cut through mix with no problems

I should also add that I'm not fan of bass ODs in general

I loved the HC - i used to boost the presence alot and have it just on the vere of breakup.

For some reason it reminded me of fender amps ie the Bassman.

Yep, that would be the one.

I didn't mess with trimpots, but I though that bluesberry setting is softer. Maybe I'm wrong.

This pedal is very amp like for sure. Very touch sensitive as well.

Hot Cake lover here. Can't find my sound clips, though...
FWIW, the Bluesberry internal switch mellows the OD tone-it's more creamy and less raspy. The other trim is to select the bass mod (extended freq. range for use with bass).

I used to run my homebuilt HotCake clone in my bass rig, and I liked the sound quite a bit -- TONS of signal gain, useful for pushing the tubes in my amp a bit harder. I rarely used it to add much signal grit, but the HotCake offers plenty of semi-dirty to nasty distortion sounds as the Drive control is increased. For a pedal that derives its distortion from an op-amp, it's quite lively and touch-responsive.

Lately I'm using a SansAmp GT2 to accomplish the same goal (some mid-range coloration and boost), but this thread prompts me to revisit my HotCake.

For those of you familiar with the current HotCake circuit: do you know what part of the circuit the internal trimpot (bass/gtr) impacts? My "stock" HotCake seems to retain bass freqs quite well, but I'm curious what adjusts in current models to better accommodate lower tones.

Is the HotCake similar at all to the Mad Prof Blueberry Bass OD (or the original BJFE version)? Obviously they've got the dessert thing in common ...but tone/feel?
