Double Bass CSO audition

Wow, that list is intense. Of course under normal circumstances no one would ever play that much rep in one week. But I was thinking, when the CSO goes on tour it's not out of the question that there would be an incredible amount of music that the principal would need to have under his/her fingers. It's not unheard of to do 5 or 6 different programs on tour, and you know how much time there is to shed on tour. Maybe that's a small part of the reasoning behind this list?

Of course, it also scares everyone away so they don't get 400 applications.

P.S. Bruckner 5, has anyone ever played Bruckner 5? 4,7, and 8 are done pretty frequently in the big orchestras, but the 5th? Please, someone tell me the last time they played Bruckner 5. Thanks :)

I'll tell you the last time I played Bruckner 5 when you tell me the last time an orchestra brought more than 3 programs on tour!:D

Actually in my orchestra we,ve played Bruckner 5 twice in the past 5 or 6 years. We play more 4th, 5th and 6th than 7,8 and 9th because of the need of wagner tubas in these last ones.

Another thing that strikes me is how un specific is about a the solo playing. " a concerto of choice and a Bach suite or sonata" Are people expectd to play a whole suite, sonata or concerto at a certain point in the audition?

It is true that you will probably never have to play that much rep in one week in any professional orchestra, but the CSO has published this list 10 weeks in advance of the audition. In my experience, this list is actually pretty representative of the amount of rep an orchestra like the CSO would go through in a 10 week period.

Forgive me for my newbie (to renting sheet music) question: Exactly how does one obtain the rental-only music on this list? I have been told it's all obtained from Boosey and Hawkes, but when I try to fill out the rental form it has a field marked with an asterick entitled something like "association." At the bottom of the page it says one needs a license from one of three different organizations, and these organizations also seem to require me to be affiliated with some group with substantial "status" in the music performance world. How do I, as an individual with no relevant affiliation, acquire the Ginastera etc.? Thanks.

<Exactly how does one obtain the rental-only music on this list?>

Your best bet is to ask to make a copy from your teacher or another student (assuming you are at a conservatory). Barring that option, many of these private domain pieces have been covered in the "Different Strokes" column in the ISB magazine, head to you local music library and start digging through the stacks. I know both Ginastera solos and Lt. Kije have appeared in Bass world. Ivan the Terrible is pretty hard to find, I only have a hand written copy...

I'll not be applying for this audition...

The list doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary, especially for one of the most coveted bass jobs in the world. Much of it has been covered in your orchestral repertoire class. (Beethoven, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Prokofiev, Schubert, Strauss...)

Bruckner 5? Yup, I've never played it either. I did play Mendelssohn 4 a few years back and it's a great piece. The first movement is a beast. Some of the shifts are nasty.

As far as 'what section of Beethoven 5 will they ask for?' Doesn't matter, really. If you can't play it, 'next'... Would you be surprised is they asked for the scherzo? or the recit from the 9th? They don't need to hear you play endless whole notes.

The player that will win this job will crush all of this music, regardless of the length of the list. My money is on an established symphonic musician who has a fair amount of experience. This is not a tutti job. Most of the section guys have been with the band for a while, so much of this will be about fit and personality.

A few years back when Bud Herseth 'retired' they auditioned for his job. and auditioned. and auditioned. I think they didn't fill the job for a few years.

CSO is obviously not going to rush this one either.

Good luck guys...
