Current Project: Headless 4

I like it. To me, it fits alot better than the cocobolo covers. However, I think you should've done an ebony board or something cause the red to me doesn't really fit. However, if you wanted to stain the board black and then sand back, that would be sweet, or just stain it black and keep it like that.

Just my opinions, but this is still a sweet lookin bass.

Greg

The board will darken once I oil it. :D I cant resist cocobolo even the smell of it makes me smile.

I got a little productive and made a bobbin for the neck pickup yesterday. The neo magnets are crazy strong making it hard to work with them but I think the end result will be worth it. Dont know why the friggin camera wont take a good picture of it.... :(

Its been awhile!!

I built a pickup! The neo magnets are awesome, I love the way this pup sounds. I also wired up a alnico Jazz pickup for comparison and there isnt any! The homemade pickup is crisper, cleaner and all around sounds better. The pup is wound to 7.5k with 42 awg formvar wire. I wound it using the wifes sewing machine and some double sided tape which worked out pretty good. After I got the windings to the number I wanted I potted it in wax. Then I shielded it with aluminum foil and put it in the cover I previously built. Once in the cover I poured wax into the cavity to seal off the entire unit. I used a 2 pair wire which has a positive and negative for the pup and a ground for the shielding. This one will go in the bridge position. I will post some sound clips once I build the other one, very soon. Hopefully I will be able to get some better pictures too, dont konw why I cant get this camera to act right.

Well I think it’s about time for some closure on this project. It’s been quietly sitting in the corner while I've been busy doing repair work. I wound both pups months ago. I am excited on the sound I’m getting from these neo magnet pups. I can't for the life of me decide what I want to do for pickup covers. I built another one out of the mineral stained poplar that the body is built from. Here is a comparison, which one do you guys like better. I’m really leaning towards the poplar, but can you ever have too much quilted maple? This being my first set of homebuilt pickups I want them to stand out! Plus it matches the knobs......
P.S. Once finished this one will be for sale. :ninja: (can't keep them all:bawl: )

I really like the contrast that the poplar pickup covers just because it provides contrast to the dark purple and matches with the knobs. It might also look cool to do some black stained maple pickups to match the black hard ware and while your at it you could do the control cavity cover the same way. just my thoughts, I really love everything youve done to this point, this is the first headless bass I 've ever appreciated.

Have you finished it yet?

Yeah its finished, as a matter of fact it found a new home today. It will be missed, :bawl: This thing can be worn for hours with out giving any discomfort. It has punch and sustain like any other bass weighing twice as much. It includes my first set of self made pups and hardware. This one was 100% built by me. The only thing not was the fretwire and the pots. I hate to see it go but I gotta make room for more! :bassist:
