Thanks - you have some great acylised wood on your basses ( I checked out your gear before I put this bass together ) :D

Your new bass is going to be fab - lovin' all that bubinga;) , I nearly went for that on this bass but wanted to keep the weight down.

Just what James has said.
It lets you use woods which would be unsuitable for fretless.
I have another bass which has a Black Palm board on it normally it is a fairly soft wood but after Larry sorts it out it works beautifully on fretless. I am also using it on fretted basses this lets me use maple boards without the problems of spraying the boards.
I just love these fingerboards.

I learned about the process extensively and it essentially wrapping the woods fibers with acrylic, making it plastic wrapped wood.

the acrylic only penetrates so deep depending on the wood so uniformity is not guaranteed.
the process was originally developed to secure spalted and other punky woods of beauty to be fit for the rigors of timber use.
I.E
counters, flooring, sink vessels, etc etc.
I will have impregnated wood for my countertops and a sink vessel or two in my next house but on a giutar or bass I dont personally like it.
Now I am sure larry or his henchmen will disagree with me saying it does nothing to the tone of the insrument but you are adding a copius amount of plastic poymer and or monomer to the wood and the structural FR/res or FrREQ
is altered therefore it undoubtedy has an effect on tone the argument would lie in the gray area of

well that would be a debate fit for the idiocy of arguing about things like religeon or politics, which i stay far away from (because theres no winning when it comes to opinion!)

I dont like plastic wood, they might. I have a company I use that does that kind of process but I still dont use them for instrument woods, like fingerboards etc.
I'll stick to countertops and flooring and leave my basses with the minimum amount of plastic in the finish only.

Well, I'm no ones 'Henchman' but I own 2 basses made with the stuff. In my experience, the process used on my wood hasn't made much more of an affect on tone than the glue, finish, and graphite stiffening rods. The process you claim to know was developed in a single shop and is a guarded secret. It's NOT the process you keep quoting for countertops.

My Bee that is made of mostly treated wood does have the flavor of a composite instrument, but it also retains the 'woodiness'. Personally I love what it adds and having listened to your band and your tone (man can you play!)... I'm surprised you wouldn't favor that extra little snap it adds to the overall tone.

Tribal, to correct your ignorantly posted information: "Stabilized", "acrylized" wood are better known as Wood Polymer Composites (WPC) and they date back to the early 1950's where research was started under the "Atoms for Peace" program initiated by President Eisenhower. The US government very much wanted to erase the atomic bomb from people's minds and find peaceful uses for for nuclear energy. A project under that program impregnated vinyl-group containing monomers into wood and cured them using gamma radiation from Cobalt 60 produced in nuclear fission reactors. The process improved some wood properties dramatically. Initial work was done at Brookhaven National Laboratories in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A pilot plant funded by the program was set up at Lockheed to run test materials for anyone that made a wood product. After that the program funded a multiyear project at West Virginia Technological University to study the properties of WPCs. This work started around 1963. The research Triangle Institute in North Carolina was awarded funds to summarize all the work in one report. ...and so on and so on and so on, but I think I'm over your head here with actual facts about Acrylized wood.

Eventually several products came out of this program like Dymondwood, Pakkawood, Gammawood, Compgreg and Impreg. The highest quality flooring is produced using acrylic impregnation methods today.

Impregnation is not hit and miss in quality systems and if your referenced "source) ( a company also in Oregon) has a problem with complete impregnation that's their problem to fix. I have fully impregnated wood 6" thick.

7 string pics of the Black Palm.It is on an early prototype which has been reworked and has not be finished spraying wise yet.
With regard to the impregnated wood I have no problem recommending it to anyone it does not detract from the sound of the bass as far as I am concerned.

I had a black palm fretboard on a fretless JP6(J-Lo)by, I believe, Larry. It was Killer! Nothing & no strings bothered that board & it sounded/played as smooth as silk...one of the only basses I really regret selling...

PS: Kudos to Larry for his magnificient woods & treatments! He's an asset to the bass community...

I don't really have anything to add to this debate, other than you'd actually be adding both by definition- a polymer is a chain of linked monomers.

Essentially, though, wouldn't an acryilized wood become basically like phenolic, which is used very commonly and sounds nothing like plastic (reference Zon)? It's my personal preference to avoid it when I can, but I think calling it plastic is an oversimplification.

Then again, I own 3 basses with phenolic boards, so I can't think it's too bad!

I'd like to see the black palm fretboard up close, it probably looks killer. Very cool looking wood!

But back to the subject- I should have a few pictures available soon!

Good points, Angus. Phenolic is solid resins while acrylized (this name was given to my product by JP) wood is solid wood which has the cells filled with liquid monomer which (with an initiator) polymerizes into a polymer. You must have some chemistry background. Dymonwood and Pakkawood are veneers (some dyed) pressed and cured. It is not similar to solid wood WPC, but is classed as WPC.
