sorry, I missed that detail, it's getting late here.. no need to get upset there mate. I meant nothing negative in what I said. The woods, will account for a lot of the difference as you and I am in agreement on.

It's a MIA Custom Classic. One thing I might attribute the lack of overtones to is the use of the pre-slotted saddles instead of custom slotted saddles. I'm not so sure that the strings laid down well with the pre-slotted saddles. In any case, I'm happy to have tried out the Badass III. It is definately a well made part. I was surprised at how much the tone changed when I installed it. Also, the E string had to be lowered all the way to get the same action I had using the stock bridge. This could prove problematic for others with different setups.

While I like the apparent quality of the Badass III, it just wasn't for me in terms of tone. I'm perfectly content with the stock custom shop bridge. I wonder if it differs in any way from a normal MIA bridge...? Probably not.

I didn't want to open up this can of worms... but I do have an email from Fender stating that all of the hardware for the CS is made inside of / or for the Custom Shop and is not shared with the MIA parts bin.. This is why for example you cannot order spare parts for a CS bass, or down load a parts list the way you do an MIA or MIM... You have to go thru them directly and give them your Serial #. i.e. it's spec'd out differently.. maybe the saddles are not the same material, size, maybe the bridge is ever so much heavier, or made of a higher grade brass.. Even the Schaller straplocks on the CS seem to be finished a little nicer.. I can forward you that email if you want... just pm me your email address.

Just got a CS custom classic (2005), 5 string Ash with maple neck/board. all I can say is WOW that is some serious tone.

And now my gripe. I would REALLY love for this thing to have a passive tone control, but wondering what the peeps up here do. I like to have a really nice aggressive slap sound ready, and then just dial that back using a passive tone control to a tone that just plays well on rhythm with everyone, sort of like a smooth walking tone.

You guys accomplish that by rolling off the treble alone? Has anyone thought about switching out the pre of these guys? I'd hate to do anything to kill the spanking slap sound, and if you think that walking tone comes nicely by just dialing out the treble, I can try that game for a bit. Didn't really seem that was completely where I dug things, but it wasn't all that bad. Gigged with it for the first time this past weekend, so getting used to it. I completely didn't plan on keeping this guy, but honestly it sounded a lot better than my f bass.

Hey, Leo. You actually got my old CC Jazz. And I agree it sounds great. Being an F Bass past owner, I'd also agree that it sounds better. What I did when I owned it was replace the mid control with a passive tone control. I found the mid frequency placed too high for my liking and never used it. With the way the Fender pre is configured it is very easy to disconnect the mid and then insert a passive tone. It works great and makes an already great sounding and playing instrument better. Congrats on the bass, selling it was my mistake.

Lol, you say that, and a certain GAS specialist is trying to get it off of me currently ;) Would love to get it to him if I didn't want it. Before i do anything I need to get some good strings on my F bass, I completely wasn't planning on keeping it (hey, you've seen me before!), but MAN this sound is ridiculous.

so, the mid is back in there huh? I agree, flat for the mids is doing exactly what I want it to. Flat on almost all of the controls, possibly a tad of bass, is awesome cause there is so much bite in the treble anyways. thanks for chiming in!

The original Geddy Lee bass was a '77.. and I think Marcus Miller's was a '77 as well. like I said above, the BadAss came out to replace the vintage bridges (and subsequently the MIM) bridges.. the new MIA bridge is a lot heavier. Geddy and MM both probably got used to the bridge and now they have it built onto their "signature" lines.. it's not a bad bridge, but you really don't need the "extra mass" anymore with the new bridge.

That being said, that is why I want a geddy lee model over the standard MIM...that is unless I mod the snot out of a Standard MIM.....:eyebrow:

Also, a dead spot in a Custom Shop bass? I'd have had them fix it. For 2k I think I'd expect it to be better than that....or am I being stoopit?
