Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

Any idea what would be a good balance of cubic feet for a 5er with a tweeter? Trying to build this for a family member.
It depends how greedy he is with the sub lows. You could tune it to get loud fundamentals down fairly low but not advised! It would be great if you can get 60hz at no worse than -6dB, and get him a f-deck LPF to protect from the super lows, then he can boost away on the lows and get a big low B without wrecking it.

You might get some clues reading the thread over from the start.

In the Eminence suggested cabs, I'd suggest something between the large and medium cab while going closer to the medium cab. The large cab gives a very nice bit of low end but limits power quite a bit and would be pretty big. I always look at "Vtotal", multiply by 1728 (12^3) to get cubic inches, then take the cubed root to get a rough idea of size. The "large" cab comes out to a bit more than 20.5" per side. You'd make it a bit more shallow and a bit less wide, so it would be getting up to about 3 ft tall.

But it'd still be a bit of a pain to move for a 1x15, and you could do better volume by giving up some of that size and low end.

Added: The medium's F3 of 64 Hz is a bit too high for a five string. You want to be below 60 Hz. The B string's fundamental is around 30 Hz. The first harmonic (an octave above) is 60 Hz. You want a cab that fully supports that.

At the same time, you may be reinventing the wheel here. If you're going to a two way system, I'd suggest you look at a proven design, namely Greenboy's fEarful. It's based around a 3015LF. It goes lower in a smaller box, at the expense of efficiency (dB per watt). http://greenboy.us/ gives the particulars. Invalid Link Removed gives you some kits that will save you a lot of time and pain.

DIY is fun and educational and will give you something you wouldn't get otherwise. But it's rarely cost effective and carries with it risk that you'll end up with something you don't really like at the end.

fEarFul will be much more likely to get you to your goal.

I have built two 12/6 and a 15/6. He wants a more vintage tone than the fEARful. I myself am sold on fEARfuls since my first 12/6.

updating a really old thread ;):
i've been gigging with the 3015 cab exclusively for the last year or so and it has been great on every gig. I was using it with either my SVT VR or my SVT 7pro, but the 7pro died a little over a week ago (and haven't got it fixed yet), so last sunday, I used my GK 1001RBII with it. to me, it sounded great, and you can hear it for yourself in this clip of my blues gig last sunday. (it's a three piece band, no rehearsals, no PA support, and our guitarist doesn't use any dirt pedals, just a blackface bassman with an occasional chorus pedal).

the clip was recorded on my Zoom H4n. the bass is a bit too loud and the guitar a little too soft since the recorder was on my side of the stage and not out in front of the band.

Sounds really good. Love the guitar playing.

Would you ever consider milling the panels and then flat shipping them as a kit?

no, but I am selling my first 2X15 cab soon (the one with aluminum grill and 15PR400's in it), since I don't really need two of them. I expect to have it in the TB classifieds later today.

A couple of questions for you John. What are the advantages to using a 3015 instead of a 3015lf? Did you sell your Streamliner?

the 3015 is a full range 15 that doesn't require a mid driver or a tweeter. the 3015LF is a low end speaker only that requires a crossover and a mid driver, or a mid driver and a tweeter.

yeah, I sold my ST-900 but am thinking about getting another one. I really liked that head.

John, I recall those fun comparisson clips at the very beginning of the thread and how undecided you were, as to which one was for you.

What made you decide for the 3015 and against the 15PR400 ?
