Custom DIY 2x15 cab build

John, I recall those fun comparisson clips at the very beginning of the thread and how undecided you were, as to which one was for you.

What made you decide for the 3015 and against the 15PR400 ?

I like them equally, maybe the 15PR400 a little more. it's just that I have the 3015's in my ampeg style cab and I use it since it matches my 7pro and SVT VR. i'm considering swapping speakers in the cabs just to be sure that I do like the 15PR400's more.

cosmetically, I think that the first one came out a little nicer (the finish on the outside of the cab is smoother) and since I use the ampeg style one a lot, it's getting a bit more beat up (as in getting some 'character' ;))

i would like to build a cab like yours also. i have 2 15 inchers that maybe someone here can identify(if i knew how i would start a thread but i suck with computer stuff, sorry)any idea what they are.i know they are 16 ohm and were working before i got them.sorry again to derail.

I don't know what they are, but I'm pretty sure they're not Peavey speakers. And they're obviously not neos like those in johnk_10's cabs.

grey area - I think it'd work better for you and this thread if you started a new thread on these things. More likely to get an ID that way, and then, you might have a conversation about how to use them without derailing this thread.

Anyone know what type of 15's this Older carvin used? the cones look exactly like EVL Cones ^magnet looks similar too but has a steel frame (found one with good speakers that I may want to use in a 2-15 I am building)

Most of the ones I saw during the 70's and 80's were loaded with what Carvin called "Magnalab" speakers . which were IIRC Eminence square magnet rebranded for Carvin. They used Altec or Electrovoice cast frame as their upgrade speakers .

do you know if the steel framed ones voice coil and cones from EV, or are they EVL clones?

AFAIK the steel framed speakers were either CTS (early cabs) or Eminence (later cabs). My experience with Carvin is somewhat limited but any cabs I've seen with EV's were always cast frame. I owned a late 70's 215 which was a POS with the stock steel frame speakers. Also owned an 18" folded horn cab that had a cast frame (probably Eminence) in it that was a solid performer. That cab took a brutal pounding at high rock volumes for over 10 years on the road nightly in clubs and never failed. Still worked fine when I sold it.

If you can get a look at the speakers in that cab and get the numbers off the frame or magnet you should be able to tell the date and manufacturer of the speakers.
