Custom graphite neck build, fretted or fretless?

Im in the process of a new build and need some talk bassers opinions

it will be 4 string
custom graphite neck
1 piece maple body with rosewood top
q tuner pickups with no preamp
hardware im unsure of yet

Fretted or fretless??

I've seen older Modulus Bassstar necks with magnetic, swappable fretboards (i.e. fretted/fretless)

well where im getting mine from is a place that just manufactured graphite, they dont usually make necks

The Graphite Guitar Systems necks are essentially identical
in construction to the Modulus necks.
Gerry Dorsch was AFAIK one of the originators of Modulus and brought some of the engineering to the table.

The Status necks are similar, laid up from cloth bonded with epoxy. My understanding is that the Moses necks are molded differently, with much less continuous fiber content and therefore a more amorphous structure.

If you're serious about getting a graphite neck made, Gerry is probably the place to go. There are many ways to do this wrong, and he's already figured them out!

They are nice fellows and might make a custom neck for you. They also know how to work with the material - I've seen their stuff at NAMM shows and it is nicely done.

i mentioned gerry because i've got a graphite neck on my bee stinger 5 string...fred uses him for 5 and 7 string necks...as per mentioned above, it's _very_ similar to a modulus neck, even down to the KLD (or, 'thousand ladies dancing') pattern in the graphite...great neck...not sure how much it costs to get one done, but fred from bee sent in a neck and gerry made molds...the start up cost would probably be expensive because of the mold that has to be made, but for a luthier that is up and coming and would consider offering graphite as an option, it would get a little cheaper after people began ordering necks...he would probably do something that would fit a standard bass for a competitive price...he is a business man after all
