Custom Single Coil with Custom Humbucker HELP

Hello everyone,

I need some wiring help. I am building an EVH Style Bass from scratch. I had custom pickups wound for this build. I have a single coil (8.6 DCR) in the neck pos. and a Humbucker (29 DCR) in the bridge pos. I have a 250k/500k Stacked Pot, .047uf Tone Cap and a Gretch Style 3 Pos. Switch to switch between Neck, Both, and Bridge.

When I have the neck pup selected, it sounds great. When I have the Bridge pup selected, it sounds great. When both are selected, it sound like I’m playing through an amp that is placed in the other room. Are the pickups out of Phase? Do I need to add a Resistor?

Your description sounds like they’re out of phase. The easiest thing to try is switch the hot and ground on one pickup only.

The Humbucker has vintage shielding and hot wiring so I’m guessing the only pup I can do this to is the Single Coil.

Yes, you only need to switch one.

That trem is interesting. It looks like a surface mount Kahler. Are the block and springs in the back connected? Is it a different Kahler then what I’ve seen before?

Yes, it’s a surface Mount Trem with 2 springs on the underside of the plate.

That’s what I thought. I have one of the early ones from the late 80’s. So the trem block and springs on the back are just to “look right?”

That’s correct. I cut a Floyd Rose Trem block in half. Drilled and tapped mounting locations for the block to mount directly to the body.
