Customize my Rick Bass

I was thinking about customizing my rickenbacker 4003 fireglo, but cant think of anything to do/change. How do you think fireglo would look with black hardware? How bout gold?

Any other ideas? Maybe a pearloid pg?

Thats awesome but Id totally screw it up. Id be better off relicing it. I guess Ill leave it but the white pickguard is pretty boring. I think itd look good with white pearloid

Don't do anything to it if you aren't sure what direction to go. If you have a clear plan proceed but don't post about it unless you want to hear all of the Ric purists freak out.

I tend not to agree that they are "perfection" from the factory....tailpiece lift, antiquated bridge/tailpiece, "Ric-O-Sound", bridge p/u ring layout and p/u's that sounded a tad "thin" to me. This is all just my opinion and even with my minor quibbles I still found Rics to be the closest for my needs that I could get off the shelf......I owned a ton of 'em and love 'em (warts and all).

What you should do is route out some space in the body and throw in a really hot pre-amp, maybe a Sadowsky. Man, that would be the sweetest Ric ever!

Don't touch that baby!

I don't know where you'd get gold (especially) or black hardware for it anyway. RIC doesn't do 'em for the 4003 (black hardware being long discontinued) and there's some pretty unique metal bits on a Rick that no one else makes (for fear of being slapped with a lawsuit from the RIC legal wolves.) Besides, gold hardware is an unforgivable sin.

Hipshot makes replacements for the tuners in gold and black, they're sorta pricey, but if its your thing.

I have no serious ideas, but I do remember reading this story one time about one of Geddy Lee's Fender P-basses. It was the instrument he recorded "fly by night" on, and he said one day the urge seized him to saw off the horns to a teardrop shape and paint it blue. And during some of the videos for "Moving Pictures" I believe you can spot it in the background there. He ends his story by saying every time he sees the bass now he apologizes to it.

So if you are going to mod your Rickenbacker, be sure to think about your future releationship with it!
