With your middle finger directly opposite your thumb move your hand until it stops at the neck heel. The note under your second (middle) finger is the stop. (e flat or d) I'm used to (and like ) an e flat neck. My hands aren't very big and I find it more convenient. I just did surgery on my new bass and converted it to an E flat neck. If you don't have a preference, I'd go for a D which is more popular. In Europe E flat necks are rare and difficult to sell. To me, and e flat neck makes more sense and offers more advantages with little drawbacks. But I think a D neck is easier to sell.
