D'Addario: good enough for Pros?

Dr. PhunkyPants said:
I am REALLY pissed that "long scale" 5 string XL sets will not fit a 35" scale bass. You have to buy "super long scale" for that.

How come DR's "long scale" and every other brand of strings I use, fit a 35" scale bass and D'addario refuses to get on board with the rest of the industry?

How many of you have bought a set of D'addarios and had to throw them away for this reason?
well I didnt throw them away. they are on my current Roscoe 6 string, and they come short right in the middle of my custom made diamond wood nut. Hope it dosnt hurt it.
First time ive used them on this bass.
Ive been very pleased with them

Yea, I didnt know you had to order the xtra long ones

I just threw some fresh D'addario's on my 6 string, and my jazz band is recording next month for a CD that we are selling... so I guess that means I'm a professional. So yup, they're good enough for pro's, just not good enough for a'holes.

There's a pro I occasionally correspond with, and this person said to me today: "no pro would use D'Addarios."

I happen to think D'Addario makes consistent, fresh, excellent strings.

But, I'm not a pro, and this person is. There's no arguing with that. :) Still, I found the statement - well, just plain wrong.

So, pros out there - are D'Addarios good enough for you?
:)

Normally, I'd have to catagorize someone who claims to be a pro but is so obviously incorrect about his chosen field as a Blow-hard. Unfortunately, your friend lacks even the basic knowledge to qualify as a Blow-hard. Yes, I'm afraid your friend is a Blow-soft.

David Beasley (that the guy that used to work at Fodera, now at te grooveshoppe and who has his own Fodera signature bass) told me personally that he thinks D'Adarrio's are the best strings out there, and i agree with him 100%

I've used D'Addario strings on orchestral strings, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, electric basses, banjos, and a couple other instruments, and thought they were great strings for all of those instruments. Not the best, but I thought they're amazing for what they are. Their projection is amazing on acoustic instruments, in my experience. On cello and acoustic guitar, they're really distinct from other strings with how well they get cut/project through an ensemble/band setting. I admittedly haven't used that many different strings on bass (just a handful), but I enjoy their clarity and roundness. I might try playing around with the gauges to mix it up a bit, but I definitely enjoy the sound. I've recorded several albums, gone on tours, and they definitely work well for me.

personal choice (and maybe sponsorship) is the ONLY factor that infuences an amature, semi/pro or a jug band string bassist (see les claypools whamola). i personally dont like XL's and i wouldnt recommend them neither would i with fender strings. Warwick yellows are the best reasonably priced strings i have found (for 4 & 5 string) but that doesnt mean i would nock any other strings i just wouldnt buy them.

I'm not a pro... but..

On my old Ibanez, I used slowounds until they were discontinued, then switched to XL's..

On my fretted Lakland, I use ProSteels.. bright, snappy, and sweet...

On my fretless Lakland, it still has the original set of Lakland strings (nickel rounds)... I've only had it for 2 days *L* I will probably replace those with either XL's, Half-rounds or flatwounds.

On my AEB, I have EXP-coated Phosphor Bronze

On My Seagull Acoustic Guitar, I have Phosphor Bronze...

If I get an elctric Guitar, I can gaurantee, I will string it with XL's...

D'Addario's are consistent, affordable, and sound great.

I use D'Addario Strings and Planet Waves Cables...

I'm amazed. 39 posts in this thread and no one has correctly identifed the pro who made this absurd statement: it's Carol Kaye.

Doesn't bother me a bit. I don't respect anything she says anyway.

I prefer XL Nickel Wounds on most of my basses and guitars.

That's 'cause I didn't care who was knockin' my strings. :)
