D'Addario: good enough for Pros?

The Craw said:
I'm amazed. 39 posts in this thread and no one has correctly identifed the pro who made this absurd statement: it's Carol Kaye.

How can you make that claim with certainty?

I'm the only one who knows.

:)

No need for names. I just wanted to hear a large body of people comment, with their experiences. The statement obviously shocked me. I have used DD's for many years, and they have never been anything less than Excellent.

Normally, I'd have to catagorize someone who claims to be a pro but is so obviously incorrect about his chosen field as a Blow-hard. Unfortunately, your friend lacks even the basic knowledge to qualify as a Blow-hard. Yes, I'm afraid your friend is a Blow-soft.

Person is not someone that would be fair to call a friend, yet still someone I correspond with occasionally.

Blow-soft - good one. :)

well, i thought it might be someone who was a little more old skool, if you get my meaning, i think she used flats for a long time right?

and i guess the only thing that you can really say about them is that they are very bright, if that is not what you are after in a string, then i guess to you they are s**t,

just my opinion...

Just thought I'd say:

Regardless of the person occasionally saying things that seem odd, I will still always have the greatest respect and admiration for this person. It's respect and admiration well earned and deserved.

Did she tell you this via email? I only ask, because I didn't see it in any of her posts on her website.

I was told via email once, that no Fender employees use Fender strings. I find that hard to believe, since IMHO Fender makes a good string. I've had no problems with them, and they're not expensive either.

I also find it hard to believe that most pros use only TI's. I see a lot of them use D'addario, or LaBella, or whatever. It's all personal preference IMHO.

Not knocking her at all. Just saying, you need to go with whatever you like the best, regardless of what gear you're talking about.

I haven't read your private correspondence, I promise. ;) But it's not the first time she's said it. And I don't find it shocking. It fits right in with her other absurd statements.

Carol Kaye endorses Thomastik. So, if she said somewhere that pros dont use D'Addario's, it was probably to protect her endorsement. I searched Carols site and there is no mention on D'Addario Strings anywhere that I can find.

If found this however on her site: (Carol Kaye)

~snip~ I have to remind everyone...there are a ton of forums where you can discuss gear subjectively. I just don't allow it here. Gear of what I endorse is fine yes (and occasional comparison to Fender etc which is what I used to play 40 years ago)....but no personal recommendations of other string co's, other instruments, amps etc. is allowed here, thank-you for your cooperation.

Unbeknownst to the general public, the top level pro's do know *a lot* about gear that we can't disclose on websites, insider-information and this includes info on strings. ~snip~

How do you explain all the pros who use them?

Like:
Steve Bailey
Oteil Burbridge
Chris Chaney
Mark Egan
David Ellefson
Jimmy Haslip
Michael Manring
Robbie Merrill
John Myung
Juan Nelson
Adam Nitti
John Pattitucci
Mike Watt
Gary Willis

And that's just a few names I remembered glancing over the bass player's list. Didn't even start on guitar.

Enough has been said.

More pros probably use them than not !
They are good strings, period ! Daddario, Ghs, and Roto sound are probably the three most used. Hey, there's still old heads that use DeAngelico ! I've tried many brands of strings and I always end up going back to Daddario XL Nickel and Pro Steels, or Ghs Boomers and Super steps. I like Boomers feel and sound but they go dead after 2 months. Daddario xl and Pro Steels last me 3 to 4 months and mellow nicely. Heck even Felix Pastorius (Jacos son) uses them ! Oh, they are easy on frets too Xls and Pro Steels as well.

If an artist has an endorsement contract they won't say if they use anything else.
Marcus Miller endorsed DR for 20 years and now all of a sudden he's with Dunlop and will be using their strings ! We don't know what these artists use in the studio though ? I know before DR Marcus used Dean Markley. Vic Wooten still uses daddario. Stanly Clarke Roto Sound. My point being , don't take an artist's endorsement as stone. Behind closed doors they probably use the strings they really like !

Yeah, I'm a full time professional bass player (over 20 years now). D'Addario strings are not only my first choice, but most of my professional colleagues as well! I've been given strings to try from most of the major manufacturers & regularly try out other brands but I still prefer D'Addario strings.

Whoever told the OP that "pros don't use D'Addario" is living in a really small world, lol!

Holy threads coming back from the vortex, Batman. :)

It took me a while to remember the person who made the quote. Actually, I don't remember for sure - I can limit it to one of two nationally known players I would have been corresponding with at the time.

Either way - the quote Was N.G. DD makes a fine string. Many fine strings.
