D'Addario Half Rounds...

Looking for some outside experiences here. I've got a set on my Ibanez SR505. That bass has the stock DX (Cort/Korea era, mid 90s) pu'ps and a Duncan SPB-3 pre circuit, for reference..
I want new pu'ps eventually, but I'm curious about anyone else's experience with the tone and delivery of these strings. Praytell?...

Here is a set of the modern SS HRs on my old fretless '97 Zon Sonus Special 5.



Played through a tc electronic SCF.

In earlier times (the mid/late '70s) I used them on a 4001 to excellent effect.

I used the from '77 until about '89 on my Precision and/or a pre EB StingRay, the original nickle ones. I started using GHS Brite-Fslts, another modified roundwound string for a while. Ultimately decided neither string really have the best attributes of flats and wounds, but rather the worst. They simply wound up sounding like dead rounds to me.

I’ve got ‘em on all my basses. Due to a finger injury and nerve damage, rounds don’t work for me and I don’t care for flats. So half rounds it is and Daddario’s fit the bill.

No complaints on tone from me.

I prefer GHS pressure wounds to half rounds. They're smoother, and they have a more consistent top end.

Half-Wounds have been my go to strings for years especially when I was flying with a one bass. Since my 'arsenal' has expanded having a PBass w/Chromes really complement my Jazz w/Half-Wounds. I also have a VM Jazz bass wrapped with Half-Wounds, it's the one I debate whether to switch to Chromes or not.

I guess it depends on your use, genre of music you lean towards and personal preference.

I currently have GHS Pressurewounds (nickel-iron rollerwound) on my P and GHS Brite Flats (nickel-iron half-round) on my J.

PW = semi-round = slightly mellowed down roundwound tone with added punch and crunch and a smoother feel than a typical roundwound.
BF = semi-flat = mainly flatwound tone and feel with added bite and definition.

I have no personal experience with D'A Half-rounds as such, but being pure nickel, they would probably be mellower than the Brite Flats.

By the way, I hated the initial stickiness on the half-rounds for the first 3 weeks or so.

Once the Brite Flats on my J are ready to be replaced, I'll be going back to the Pressurewounds.

I agree. I've used both GHS Brite Flats and D'Addario Half Rounds on my Rickenbacker 4001 for decades. I prefer Brite Flats but Half Rounds are also a very good set of strings, IMO.

A friend of mine has two-year-old half-wounds on his P-Bass that sound and feel like old, good flats. I've never had the patience for that. I hated em.

Thread necromancy... but I put a set of D’Addario half rounds on my Jack Casady, and its pretty magical.

It really depends on the bass. While I personally prefer half-wounds over rounds, they're not for everyone.
