dammit, Monster Rock vs Bass?

A few months ago I bought a Monster cable for myself, and not knowing much about Monsters, I managed to get myself the Rock version, without even realizing that there existed a Bass version as well! Well they only had the Rocks up on display, and my friend had told me that "Monster cables are good".

Besides telling the obvious "check before you buy something", can anyone tell me whether there's any difference between Monster Rock and Monster Bass before I even bother to try and exchange it, cos its been a few months already and I'm not even sure whether I can exchange it? I have a feeling I'm splitting hairs, and a cable is a cable...

Opening a can of worms with this thread, but here is the long and short of it:

Monster Bass has 2 thick copper centers twisted and sheilded, time correcting multi-guage wire networks, and a braided copper shielding. The Monster Rock cable has a single copper core and a less dence copper shield (95% sheilded on the Rock, 98% on the Bass).

What does that all mean? Not much. I really can't hear a difference between the cables. The ends on the Bass cables are black and the Rock are gold.. pretty. :-)

As far as swapping, any GOOD shop will swap Monster cables as long as they are the same price. I do it here all the time. If your in RI, stop on by.

If the above posts don't quite answer the question, then I've got nothing more to add. Just wanted to say that I bought a bunch of those "bass" cables several years ago, before learning the truth about cables on this site, and though they are fine quality cables in their own right, there's nothing special about them at all. The "free" Fender cables that come with their guitars/basses sound exactly the same, as do Planet Waves, Mongami, or any other brand of cables you can buy.

I use them, they are fine cables - nothing extraordinary, BUT:

buy one and you'll never have to buy another. Every Guitar Center replaces them no questions asked when you walk in with one EVEN WITHOUT RECEIPT. Many other manufacturers require a receipt or to mail the cables in to them.

Since 1995, I have swapped out my Monster instrument cable 5 times and never paid another penny, even when the cable got sliced in two by a falling piece of equipment.

No questions asked, no receipt, no hassle. Just walk in with it. A lifetime of working cables for purchasing only one. Can't beat it.

All of these responses are great. Somewhat more thoughtful than the usual eye-roll.

Now, here a piece of inside dope:

I have a friend who works in their design department. He told me recently that Monster is working on two new prototypes - one specifically for "Precision" and one for "Jazz" type basses.

As if it wasn't complicated enough.

That is the single reason I use them. No questions asked.

Yeah, I can beat that easily. Since around 1982 I've had the first Bill Lawrence/George L's cable I made. It's never failed. In that same time I've had several other cables that weren't remarkable at all, just good Belden cable and real Switchcraft plugs. None of them have failed at all. So, instead of having to replace five cables, I've never had one fail.

The lifetime replacement warranty does me no good at a gig when things fail. I don't want them to replace it if it goes bad, I want them to make it so it doesn't go bad. And given the cost of the Monsters, pro-rated over five cables and using 1995 dollars, is that any kind of a "deal"? Not to me.

So when a cab falls on your cable and it's cut, who will buy you a new one?
What do people have against these cables? They do have alot of marketing behind them, but the bottom line is they are tough and have a GREAT warranty.
