Damn she’s heavy!

Ive only owned 2 basses, both Ibanez’s a very light SR 300 that I love and an SRF 750 Fretless 5 string that is a dream to play but had an itch for a jazz or precision and have only played a few at the local shop. Well I just got my new Fender Elite PJ and she is beautiful. The neck feels like a million bucks and it just ooozes quality at every level, but WOW! It’s heavy. I haven’t weighed it yet, but I’m noticing the weight around my shoulders more so than when playing my Les Paul that weighs a ton. Where does all this weight come from? Wood density? High Mass Bridge? Hardware?

You'll find lots of variation in weight, even given the same model, color, run, etc. That's why you see people constantly asking "weight?" in the bass classifieds.

I recently snagged a Lakland Skyline PJ. The ones I found of the same color/model ranged from ~8.5 up to 11.5 lbs.

All in all a few pounds isn't that much, but my first 3-4 basses were around 8-9 lbs. The first time I bought one above 11 lbs I noticed the difference every time I played it standing. Wouldn't stop me from grabbing a bass that plays/sounds great - I just don't register the weight at all when they are under ~9. YMMV...
