Double Bass Dampits

As a result ot this thread, I've purchased not only a digital hygrometer, but also a room humidifier. Curiously, the digital hygrometer measures consistently about 12% less humidity than the mechanical one....I am suspicious of this, so I think I'll just split the difference and call it even.

The humidifier is by Honeywell, and so far I'm pretty pleased with it. It vaporizes the water by heating it, and is therefore virtually silent. It also has a large (1 gal.) tank that is easy to refill, and makes the air in the room much more comfortable to breathe as well.

Does anyone know the diff between cool and warm moisture humidifiers? I just went out and purchased the largest unit I could find - it produces cool moisture. It ran all night and emptied about 5 gallons...Though it puts out more water than my warm humidifier, it doesnt feel as...well..humid. Also the cheesy humidistat (that comes with a dampit) did not register any higher levels in the morning. I am thinking of exchanging this one. Any comments? Also it is loud and really really cooled down the room...not a good thing.
 
Just put up the Radio Shack digital Hydrometer...thingie.
I'm at 35%. I'll have a humidifier in tomorrow night. My question is, Could there be a problem with moving from 35 to 48% all at once (drastic change and all...)
Should I gradually bring it up over a couple days?
I went ahead and used the dampit until tomorrow night. Figured it's the lesser of 2 evils.

I'm a notorious humidifier-pusher. But I worry about people over-humidifying in the Winter. If you keep your instrument at 50% then take it out to a rehearsal in a hall with forced air, and the humidity there is 15-20%, you're in danger of getting cracks (or worse). Experience has taught me to gradually bring the humidity down in the Fall to about 35-40% in the dead of Winter. I believe it is the gradual change that's important. Like Jeff, I also abhor dampits, but here's a tip for travelers: Leave the bass in the cover, and if you must use dampits, put baloons on the ends to help prevent puddles. You males out there should know how to do this...Seriously, though, as Jeff said, these things will give up their moisture real quick, so you'll probably have to fill them a few times a day. Hey, you engineer types: how about an internal bass humidifier that works???
 
I'm struggling with 2 humidifiers right now to exceed 40%. I hate jerking around with these not knowing if I end up doing more harm than good. The violin/bass shops I've been to have the large floor standing models and they seem to do the job. Maybe I'll try one of those (right now I have a 3 gal Holmes warm mist and another smaller lower output cool mist) I think it will start thunderstorming in there anytime now.

Speaking of humidity problems, I just bought a new flat-back bass from Seattle, and I live in Spokane, so humidity is certainly a problem as we're much drier. Bryce from H-A recommended using this little sponge thing that you stick in a empty spot in your case and it supposedly humidifies the whole case. I filled mine up half full of water and stuck it behind the neck by attaching it to the case using the supplied sticky things (yes, that's the technical term). I've only had it for a few days so we'll see how it does. I just hope it doesn't drip...

I'm not familiar with the case sponges but I assume there are some of the same issues as with the dampits.
You just want to make sure you don't let the sponge go dry as it can end up sucking moisture away from the bass.

I just got rid of the 2 smaller humidifiers (that were cranking non-stop and couldn't get over 42%) in favor of a floor standing unit for about 130.00

Stuck it near a cold air return and now the whole house is regulated at 45%. Works great.

I concur that Dampits can cause problems. I used them a couple of times and did my best to wring them out, but still noticed a small stain in the bottom of the bass rib where they had dripped. Fortunately no damage has been done, but I will not repeat using them again! I have since bought 2 humidifiers and 2 digital humidity gauges (one upstairs where my bass lives and one downstairs for my cello. I try to keep it in the 45-50% range in Virginia.

Easily a five-minute laugh Jeff, good one!

We use a handful of Holmes, the best models being the ones with the higher capacity. Less chance of it going dry on you if you're out for a couple of days.

As far as shipping in the cold, don't worry. I've never had cold damage anything, and I'm in the snowy north where we see plenty of it. Heat has damaged varnish.

As far as ideal numbers, we follow Ahnold's philosophy of avoiding shock. Since we usually have maybe 25 or 30 basses on hand at any given time, and scads of cellos and chin instruments, I have a good test area for humidity. Nothing has popped that I can recall when over 35%.

Side note: the rep for SKB cases was telling me about the groovy space-age material they use in their case humidifier. When I probed a bit more, she admitted that it's the same as a contraceptive sponge. :)
 
I live in San Antonio, and it's been dry here lately (25% average), and I keep my humidifier running. My question is, I've got a two week tour coming up in February to (of all places) Arizona. (I imagine the humidity there will be in the teens or lower). Since the tour is two weeks, and my bass will be trucked out (we're flying), what would you do?
 
I had a bad experience with using only a humidifier to keep my bass from cracking, and dampits seem to have saved the day. My switch from humidifier to dampits was done with the recommendation of David Gage, one of the top bass repairmen in NYC. A few years ago I had been keeping my bass out of its case and used a cool mist humidifier, diligently refilling and cleaning for quite a while. But after a few cold weeks in January the side cracked. I took my bass to Gage and asked him how I could prevent this bearing in mind I had a humidifier going 24-7. He told me that if you have a large dry room with a lot of wood in it, the room can suck up most of the moisture with very little or none left for the bass – regardless of where you put the instrument and/or humidifier. He suggested I keep dampits in the bass and the bass in its case where only the bass will suck up the moisture. I have done this for a while now and it seems to have worked well.

Then I read the comments by Jeff Bollbach. It makes me a bit nervous.

Spray a water bottle on a flat surface at 30%, come back in 3-4min. and it'll be gone. The water in a well-wrought dampit is less. The dampit was a good idea at the surface level but it just doesn't hold up to real physics.

I’m not sure I fully understand this. If the water sprayed on the wall from the water bottle disappears in 3-4 minutes then how could the water in the well wrung towel (or dampit) hang around long enough to form a puddle? I often leave damp (sometimes pretty wet) clothes around to dry and no puddle forms. Doesn’t this all depend on the level of humidity in the room and what is there to suck up the moisture?

Luckily, this may not even matter. The dampits I own (as well as any I’ve come across) are encased in rubber with small holes along the side to allow the water to escape. I also glue the bottoms of the dampits to their sides and store my bass upright so I’m not sure how water could escape through the bottom.

And there are a lot of scenarios where basses must be kept in their cases. Way back when I was in school the only place to store our basses was in a bass room or locker where humidifiers weren’t plausible. I’m sure there are many reasons to keep your bass in the case, and many situations where it is a necessity. And, of course, there is travelling around with the bass, which has already been mentioned.

I do try to use a humidifier to keep my apartment from getting so dry, but this is as much if not more for my health as opposed to the health of my bass. I have a couple of dampits that I wring out pretty well before putting them in the f-holes. I usually change them every other day or sometimes every day if it’s really dry. This has worked for a number of years – my bass has not cracked since!

Paul Bollbach and Arnold Schnitzer are experienced and respected luthiers. But I seem to be having a very different experience with dampits…
 
Pardon me if I missed the answer, or if I missed it in another Newbie link.

Chris Fitzgerald asked about high humidity. I'm in North Florida where the humidity is around 100% in the summer. Would I need to dehumidify for the structural soundness of a carved bass?

Also, would a hybrid give me more "wiggle" room for humidity and temperature extremes? Seems like a good laminated bass would be essentially, as you can easily go from an air-conditioned room (~72 degrees, 40% humidity) to the sweltering heat outdoors :cool: (100 degrees, 100%), and the bag can only help so much. Gotta run to the old Dodge van and crank the AC!!
